Fundraiser play for Fireside school

Bow Valley High School and its drama students will present The Nutcracker on Dec. 14 as a fundraiser for Fireside School that opened up on Nov. 14 after several delays.

The Nutcracker, a classic Christmas story, is a story in two acts centered on a family’s Christmas Eve celebration. It is based on E.T.A. Hoffmann’s 1816 fairytale The Nutcracker and the Mouse King.

Bow Valley drama teacher and director of the production, Adrienne Fossheim said the show is a good way to get into the holiday spirit while also helping out the newly built school.

“I think what’s really special and unique about this production is we’re doing it within my drama class. There are grade 10, 11 and 12 students involved and what we decided to do is actually do a play to bring some Christmas spirit to the brand new Fireside School that just opened up across the highway from us, ” Fossheim said.

“(It) will be the first performance on their new stage. All the proceeds that we make off the production will go towards supporting their playground initiative. We’re really excited not only to do a Christmas production, but do it for a unique and important cause, ”

“Bow Valley as a school really has that give-back type feel over the Christmas holidays. We want to foster the relationships with students over at Fireside, and do something meaningful for them. ”

Fossheim said The Nutcracker was an easy choice for her and her students to choose when deciding on a Christmas play.

“We decided as a class that we’d like to do a production revolving around Christmas, and this particular script lends itself to a smaller class size, ” Fossheim said.

“It involves students from each grade to perform acting, dancing as well as the production side of the play and really encompasses the learning and outcomes that we’re trying to do as a drama class, ”

“It’s a really kid-friendly play and we’re going to include the Fireside students to get up and dance, do some things within the play as well. ”

Tickets for the show are priced at $10.00 which are available on Bow Valley Drama’s Facebook page or by cash at the door.
