To most, swimming in ice-cold water for nearly two kilometres, biking a 93-kilometre course littered with steep climbs and finishing off with a more than 21-kilometre run in the blazing heat is not the ideal way to spend a Sunday.

Athletes bring home huge medal haul from Games

Like many of his fellow athletes, Erik Nusl ventured to the Alberta Summer Games with the hope of performing his best and maybe coming away with a medal.

However, after three days of competing in the Peace Region during the province-wide event held July 19-25, the Cochrane swimmer blew his expectations out of the water, so to speak. (more…)

Near misses continue for Profit

It was déjà vu all over again for Cochrane chuckwagon driver Grant Profit, as he narrowly missed the championship dash for the second-straight event at the Bonnyville Chuckwagon Championship July 22-25.

Profit’s three-day aggregate time at the World Professional Chuckwagon Association (WPCA) event left him just six-tenths of a second back of the third and final spot in the George Normand Memorial (more…)

Injury costs sprinter nationals trip

As the 2010 Canadian Track and Field Championships get underway July 28-31 in Toronto, a Cochrane sprinter is on the outside looking in.

Jennifer Zimmer suffered a stress fracture in her lower right shin earlier this year and is still feeling the after-effects of the injury.

Whitecaps turn to midfielder Gage

After watching from the sidelines during the Vancouver Whitecaps’ first 17 games this season, Cochrane’s Ethan Gage finally saw some action July 22 against the Portland Timbers, entering the match in the 70th minute.

In what little time he had, the 19-year-old midfielder must have impressed the coaching staff, as he started for Vacnouver three days later against the NSC Minnesota Stars and played all 90 minutes. (more…)

Local golfers unite for fun tourney

More than 100 golfers turned out for the Cochrane Golf Club’s midsummer Friday Night Open Mixed Fun Tournament July 23.

The tournament was strictly for fun and thus no handicaps were used. The club is now preparing a similar tournament for Sept. 10. (more…)

Archer takes aim at nationals competition

Consistent form on the archery range can take a lifetime to perfect; however, Cochrane’s Tracey Klettl has quickly become one of the sport’s top Canadian competitors after only being introduced to it by a friend three years ago.

The 45-year-old rarely goes a day without picking up the bow and firing at something, be it a paper target or a foam animal. She even has a backyard range set up at her home just outside of town and makes (more…)

Flames re-sign Cremona prospect

Cremona’s J.D. Watt sees a changing of the guard in the Calgary Flames organization.

The 23-year-old winger hopes this will work in his favour, as he was recently re-signed to a one-year deal by the team. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Raymond inks two-year deal with Canucks

The Vancouver Canucks announced July 25 that they had avoided arbitration with Cochrane winger Mason Raymond, signing the 24-year-old to a two-year deal worth $5.1 million.

Raymond played all 82 regular-season games for the Canucks last season, logging career highs in goals (25), assists (28) and points (53).

Enforcer McCue shipped to New York

Matt McCue

Playing under the lights at Madison Square Garden would be a pretty special way to start one’s NHL career, and now Cochrane defenceman Matt McCue will get a chance to do just that.

The Anaheim Ducks officially dealt McCue, who split time between the Manitoba Moose of the American Hockey League (AHL) and the East Coast Hockey League’s Bakersfield Condors last season, to the New York Rangers  earlier this month. (more…)
