Jason Seper may be just beginning his first week at the Cochrane RCMP detachment, but the new staff sergeant has close ties to the community.

Seper, who worked for the RCMP in Grande Prairie for the past four years, lived in Cochrane for a number years before heading up north and worked at the detachment previously.

Tschetter appeals for shorter sentence

A man whose son was killed by a Cochrane cement truck driver in 2007 calls the announcement of an upcoming appeal date “maddening, disappointing and discouraging.”

Lee Morrison lost his infant son after a cement truck plowed into the back of a small vehicle stopped at a red light in south Calgary.

Cochrane High principal set to retire

The top spot at Cochrane’s oldest high school will soon be vacant.

Cochrane High principal Chris Lees is set to retire at the end of June after 34 years in education.

“This has been the most rich and rewarding career,” he said of his time in various schools in Rocky View including Beiseker and Chestermere.

‘No easy switch’ to accommodate Earth Hour request

Cochrane councillors found out March 8 that turning off the streetlights in town is a complicated process.

After Nic David, from the Cochrane Environmental Action Committee, appeared before council Feb. 22 to ask if the town could get behind Earth Hour March 27 and turn off municipal lights from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., council asked  staff to find out what was possible.

Environmental reserve transferred to provincial park

The town has officially transferred an environmental reserve in GlenEagles to the Friends of the Glenbow Ranch Provincial Park.

Despite opposition from a handful of residents at an open house Feb. 22, council passed the transfer bylaw unanimously March 8.

Stephen Utz, a member of the Town’s planning department, told council the bylaw has been reworked and believes it addresses the residents’ concerns. (more…)

No rest for McBride as he settles into full-time posting

After two months in his new full-time job, Mayor Truper McBride said it’s going well.

“Instead of juggling two competing activities it’s refreshing to dedicate myself to one job,” said McBride, as he no longer works in Calgary as a part-time project manager for Long View Systems.

Constable’s court date postponed

The Cochrane RCMP constable accused of breaking into an elderly woman’s home had his case held over until March 30 after appearing in court March 9.

Eric Matthew Keith Anderson, 22, is alleged to have broken into the woman’s home during the early morning hours of Feb. 14, leaving after he was confronted by the homeowner and her brother.
