Horses and owners both need spring conditioning

Happy Trails

A friend and I were having a conversation about how to get our horses fit for the upcoming riding/driving season.

We were bemoaning the fact that our horses seemed to be carrying some extra “winter weight” and that we certainly had our work cut out for us (as we sat sipping yummy beverages and enjoying our snack).

Coffee with Warren

One flower holds a warm place in the hearts of many of us as we emerge from winter into spring’s colourful glow: tulips.

With wise planning and lots of tender care, these natural cups of joy attain their special splendour in world-class gardens that never cease to inspire photographers.

Behind the Bench

As the years go by there are times when one wishes to be young again, in this case, if only for one week.

Now I wasn’t there when Calgary Stampeder fans made the Grey Cup the event it is today back there in 1948. The game between the Stamps and Ottawa was to be played in Toronto and someone thought maybe the Stamps could use a little fan support.

Wee Jackie Weighs In

It’s not often I get the opportunity to write book reviews so bear with me.

The last book review I penned was many years ago after a fellow Calgary Sun staffer wrote a book on stamps from some remote and very anonymous island clinging to life in the Pacific Ocean.

Just the Facts

With five years until transit is back on the council table, I was hoping that the costs to taxpayers associated with outside companies running and moderating our public engagement would stop.

When council cancelled the June plebiscite on transit my understanding is that public transit was moved down the list of priorities until at least 2017 when we will have to decide to use the GreenTRIP grant, return it to the province or ask for an extension.

Fishing Tales

It was Good Friday in early April and my day started off, well, not good. I headed down to the dog park to fly fish the lower Bow River in Calgary.

I know a cool spot to fish but to get to it I had to navigate my way down a muddy slope. I was sure that the studs on the bottom of my wading boots would hold my footing, but I was sorely wrong.

New Apatow flick a long, but very ‘engaging’ comedy

It’s no Bridesmaids, but The Five-Year Engagement, now playing at the Cochrane Movie House, is still worth its weight in laughs. Many will go simply following the trailer highlighting that this movie is from the raunchy, comedic producer Judd Apatow (Bridesmaids, Knocked Up). But don’t set the bar too high, or you may find yourself disappointed.

Firewood gave column’s fans something to groan about

Coffee with Warren

Now that the smoke has cleared after last week’s column on Firewood (“the sparkling candidate voters could really warm up to”), it’s easy to see that many of our readers are gluttons for PUNishment – at least, if the many groan-worthy responses are any indication.

“As soon as I twigged onto it, I realized it would be a ‘growner,’” wrote former Ghost Lake Village resident/mayor Angus McNee.

Flames’ Cup win overflowing with good stories

Behind the Bench

As we done before, let’s take a walk down memory lane for a moment or two. This one really didn’t go back that far, only to the Stanley Cup win of the Calgary Flames, which is historic in that it’s likely to be the only Cup win for the club the way it’s going.

So we step back to 1989 and the perusal of a Calgary Sun copy a friend of mine found stored in his stuff at home and allowed me to borrow for a day or two.
