Wee Jackie Weighs In

Furthermore.

So I missed a week, but with good reason — I was getting my battery charged.

Actually that’s true. I’m now  a bionic man. On Feb. 27 I passed out for a few hours at home and was rushed to Foothills emergency, where I waited  47 hours, but was finally awarded a bed in the cardiac unit.

Tests showed the wiring in my heart malfunctioned, (more…)

Happy Trails

Lately the news has been filled with disasters in various parts of the world — the emphasis has been on the human and property damage, but there are also concerns about all the domestic animals caught in the situations.

While we don’t have to worry about earthquakes and tsunamis here, there are other emergencies that can impact our equine friends.

Are you prepared for an emergency? (more…)

The Sustainability Files

This past week in the city of Lethbridge, I had the distinct pleasure to be a guest at a regional sustainability conference attended by more than 40 municipal councils from across southern Alberta.

Yes, sustainability is becoming a buzzword, even in the council chambers of our windy southern neighbours.

On hand for a keynote presentation was former British Columbia premier Mike Harcourt, best known as the premier who advocated for sustainability (more…)

Coffee with Warren

There is a beloved prayer in Judaism that is fundamental to Christianity as well. As we approach the Jewish Passover and Christian Holy Week, I’d like to reflect on what Jesus called “the first and greatest commandment” and what Jews call simply the Shema.

Shema (pronounced sh’-MAH) is a Hebrew word meaning “hear.” It is the first word in the ancient text of Deuteronomy 6:4-5, the beginning of Judaism’s great confession of faith. In the Tanakh, the Jewish Publication Society’s translation (more…)

Just the Facts

Have you heard the rumours?

If you haven’t yet, there will be plenty soon enough as to who is running in the next election. Pay attention and spread the word. Tell your friends who don’t read our local paper that it is time to start.

No one is going to knock on the door and give them a one-on-one update every week, so take advantage of our door-to-door free newspapers in Cochrane. (more…)

Meet Your Neighbours

Len Hills has packed much learning and teaching into a busy life.

Growing up in remote bush country near Peace River, he later pursued his passion for geology, archaeology and other disciplines as a student, then as a professor during a 30-year career at the University of Calgary, and then as a professional consultant — which has helped him forge unique connections with the natural world.

At age six, Len shot his first grouse, and he’s been hunting ever since. (more…)

Coffee With Warren

The 2010 Winter Olympics are being praised widely as an example of excellence and determination for the sake of nation-building. Certainly, our own nation has been drawn more closely together because of the work of the Vancouver organizers and the amazing achievements of our athletes: 26 medals in all, with a record-setting 14 of them gold.

It took a movie I saw over the weekend, however, to help me understand the gold from a wider perspective. (more…)

Mayor reviews council accomplishments, and future goals

Mayor's column

In almost nine years on council, I haven’t seen a term as productive as the current one. While past councils tended to sit back, content with the status quo of a bedroom community, this council has been working to transform Cochrane.

We began our term two and a half years ago by ordering a corporate health check to review the way the administration  operated. The check up returned a comprehensive set of recommendations (more…)
