Hard working Bow Valley student up for scholarship
Seventeen-year-old Erica Scott of Bow Valley High (BVH) has realized early on in life that hard work and perseverance pays off.
The Grade 12 honour role student, who dreams of getting into the University of British Columbia to begin work on her double major (engineering and arts) degree come fall, is a role model among her peers — just as happy to be a leader as she is to take a step out of the limelight to help another sparkle.
And right now, her fingers are crossed that her dream of receiving a Schulich Leader Scholarship comes true; all Canadian high schools are eligible to nominate one candidate each year who meets the criteria: exceptional academic grades, strong leadership both in school life and in the community, entrepreneurial talent and who also demonstrates financial need.
Bow Valley High has nominated Erica Scott for the scholarship.
All recipients must be in pursuit of studies in the areas of science, technology, engineering or mathematics; a total of $60,000 will be awarded in the amount of $15,000 per year over the period of four years.
“She speaks strongly for the things she believes in, but never to be diminishing,” said Tara Sly, English teacher, communications and media contact at BVH.
“She’s not afraid to work behind the scenes or to take a step back and let others shine.”
The road to get there has been anything but slack for Scott, who keeps a brimming schedule year-round between all of her activities and projects: academics (maintaining at least an 80 per cent average in all of her classes), athletics (soccer), performing arts (theatre), visual arts (drawing, painting and other mediums), writing for the school newspaper and volunteer work.
“A lot of people choose to look at school as a waste of time or a place they have to go,” said Scott. “But I actually like school.”
Scott has been an advocate and leader for Students for Change — a volunteer group of students from BVH who raise awareness and funds for local and international charities. The group has been working this school year to raise money for Easter Seals, as well as for Invisible Children — an organization that seeks to end the use of child soldiers and advocates for peace in central Africa.
The group is working toward their goal of $17,000 to go to building a radio tower in Uganda for Invisible Children.
“I’ve always been into helping people,” said Scott. “It’s hard to do it by yourself, so when I heard of Students for Change, I was really interested.”
Scott cites her two younger brothers and her mom as her sources of inspiration.
Fifty recipients (10 in Israel and 40 in Canada) will be granted Schulich Leader Scholarships in June. Visit schulichleaders.com for more info.
