STARS ring in fundraiser

Cochranite and former Calgary Stampede Princess, Janelle Phillips, received the first STARS red ring for life when the the fundraising program started in 2010.

STARS air ambulance is hoping to get people to share their stories in support of the air ambulance by wearing a red ring for life.

“By wearing the ring it’s a way that people can instantly recognize somebody else who’s involved,” said STARS spokesperson Cam Heke. “If you see somebody wearing those red rings you can then tell your story.”

The rings are also a fundraiser for STARS with the campaign starting in 2010 to coincide with the STARS 25th anniversary.

Morley food bank begins Christmas push to fill hampers

The Nakoda Food Bank in Morley.

For the staff and volunteers at Nakoda Food Bank, it’s the busiest time of the year — getting the usual daily push for food hampers together and out the door, as well as putting together enough hampers for the Dec. 22 Christmas hamper give away at the Morley Recreation Centre.

SLS Family Sports Centre celebrates 10th anniversary

Spray Lake Sawmills (SLS) Family Sports Centre will be celebrating its 10th anniversary on Dec. 7, offering an array of activities to surrounding area residents free of charge.

Opening its doors in 2001, the SLS Centre has morphed into a full-service recreational centre over the past decade.

Senior curlers have experience to spare

The Super Seniors Square Bonspiel is Dec. 1-3 at the Cochrane Curling Club.

Cochrane curlers are back at it — they’re busy sliding, skipping and sweeping. But for some members of the Cochrane Curling Club — the senior men’s and mixed leagues in particular — the sport is about more than playing a game, it’s about staying active and keeping fit.

Mike Beitel, 89, Gordon McNaughton, 85, and Bill Stewart, 90, have a combined curling history that spans more than 150 years.

Group goes to ‘bat’ for environment

Helping to preserve the environment and its inhabitants big and small is not merely an initiative of today’s youth, but those of all ages.

For 15 years now the Seniors for Kids Society (SKS) has been bringing together the generations of Cochrane with their Grandparent Program, and recently wrapped up a project that saw the development and placement of blue bird houses to help alleviate a developing nesting issue with the regional species.

The Sojourners travel through world of gospel

It’s no secret that this part of the land is rich with country, folk and roots artists — a natural find in a western demographic. But gospel music? Most would agree musicians in this genre are found a little fewer and further between on this side of the border.

Award-winning gospel trio, The Sojourners, are making their way to town for a Cochrane Valley Folk Club (CVFC) show at the Alliance Church on Dec. 4 for the final CVFC show of the calendar year.

Classic car lovers have club to call their own

A proud owner of a ‘66 Mustang convertible — fully restored and clad in it’s original seafoam exterior — Ken Hutchinson has started the Cochrane Classic Car Club, with the intention to build a community of like-minded chariot enthusiasts who will work together to build a platform to share, show, shine, buy and sell anything and everything to do with classic rides.

Injuries, Wildcats’ speed neutralize Cobras’ venom

The No. 1-ranked Coch-rane Cobras went into last Saturday’s Alberta Tier 3 high school provincial football championship expecting to win.

But the Stettler Wildcats didn’t get the memo, as the No. 8-ranked Wildcats stunned the Cobras 55-15 at the Alberta Bowl provincial final in Lethbridge.
