Soup-tacular fall feast on harvest dinner menu

Tara Anderson of CCCK is excited about what the community-centered initiative will do for local artisans.

It’s a fall feast sure to satisfy.

That’s what Tara Anderson and Trish Tansley of the Cochrane Cookhouse and Comm-unity Kitchen (CCCK) and Andrea Blonsky of the Cochrane Comm-unity Gardens Society (CCGS), with the help of a slough of volunteers, have on the agenda for their first harvest dinner.

The dinner will take place at Seniors on the Bow on Nov. 3 at 7 p.m., located on the second level of Spray Lake Sawmills Family Sports Centre (SLSFSC). (more…)

Stockmen’s Dinner plans for big crowd

As the Stockmen’s Memorial Foundation (SMF) annual fundraising dinner and auction approaches, it appears this will be the biggest turnout that the foundation has had in a number of years, with an anticipated 200 attendees and tickets still available for purchase.

The dinner, which takes place on Oct. 29 at 7 p.m. (doors open at 5 p.m.), is a full-fledged prime rib affair, catered by Pat’s Palette Pleasers, with both a live and silent auction to follow.

“We have a lot of new people coming this year,” said SMF librarian, Jana Wilson, emphasizing how important the foundation is to the historical integrity of Cochrane. (more…)

Freedom from wheat board positive sign for western grain farmers, says Richards

Wild Rose MP Blake Richards is excited for western and prairie grain farmers who now have the same marketing choice as their eastern counterparts when it comes to where they choose to sell their products.

On Oct. 18 the federal government introduced the Marketing Freedom for Grain Farmers Act in an effort to end the monopoly the Canadian Wheat Board (CWB) had on the industry.

In his report, Richards pointed to what he referred to as ‘fear mongering’ coming from the CWB attempting to maintain the stronghold it currently has on the western farming industry. (more…)

Wedding gone to the dogs

John Costigan and Peggy Macleod were wed in a small ceremony where they met - the Cochrane off-leash dog park.

A little bit of puppy love can go a long way — all the way, in fact, to a ceremony of nuptials before friends and family at the Cochrane off-leash dog park.

On Oct. 22, Peggy Macleod, 43, and John Costigan, 49, were wed before commissioner Ian Brown on the old bridge at the off-leash dog park, located east of Highway 22 and north of George Fox Trail, along the Bow River. (more…)

Goblins, ghouls to gather at Cochrane RancheHouse

For little ghosts and ghouls aged 10 and under, the spookiest place to be in town is the Cochrane RancheHouse on Oct. 30 from 2-4 p.m.

Highway crash kills man

A single-vehicle rollover on the Trans-Canada Highway on Oct. 23 resulted in the death of a lone Calgary motorist.

Cochrane RCMP responded to the scene at 6:30 p.m. after receiving a call about the collision, which occurred at Range Road 33 near Calloway Park.

Witnesses reported that the victim’s truck flipped once it hit the bridge and rolled on the highway heading westbound. (more…)

Jacket Racket program needs clothing for kids

Jacket Racket FCSS program really needs coats for kids.

Led by Cochrane Family and Community Services (FCSS), the Jacket Racket is in full charity swing.

Every year the fall push is on to gather winter clothing for those in need.

Brian Pugh, FCSS coordinator for community resources, noted this year’s lack in winter coats for kids ages 12 and under. (more…)

RVC rejects request to remove access gates

Rocky View councillors unanimously rejected a request to remove a set of emergency access gates in Springbank’s commercial park, Oct. 18.

Approval of the request, made by the park’s developer, Prospect Canada Inc., would have facilitated the removal of a temporary cul-de-sac, located on private lands, and given access to Township Road 245. (more…)

Separate paths both lead to CFL

Calgary Stampeders running back Rob Coté and Saskatchewan Roughriders offensive tackle Alexander Krausnick-Groh may have started out playing football at Cochrane High School, but after that they travelled separate paths to the Canadian Football League.

After Graduating in 2004, Coté caught the ferry to Vancouver Island where he spent two seasons playing in the B.C. Football Conference (BCFC) with the Victoria Rebels. Following two MVP seasons with Victoria, the undrafted running back walked right into a job with the Calgary Stampeders at the start of the 2007 season after a strong training camp. (more…)
