Cement truck driver denied dayparole

The National Parole Board denied Daniel Tschetter’s bid for day parole on Oct. 20.

The former Cochrane resident was the driver of a cement truck who was convicted on multiple counts of manslaughter for killing five people when he smashed into their car while under the influence of alcohol.

The incident occurred on Dec. 7, 2007 when Tschetter’s truck collided with the victim’s car while it was stopped at a stoplight in south Calgary.

Highway twinning dominates chamber conversation

For motorists, the sight of a ‘Construction zone begins’ sign can be somewhat of an exasperating ordeal, particularly during peak rush hour.

The twinning of Highway 1A was the primary issue on people’s minds during the Cochrane and Area Chamber of Commerce’s Lunch and Learn on Oct. 19 at Frank Wills Memorial Hall.

Present to address the substantial turnout of local business representatives was Rick Deans, senior manager of infrastructure and Kathy Dietrich, senior manager of planning and engineering, both for the Town of Cochrane. (more…)

Remediation of Domtar site almost complete

The former Domtar site is in its final stages of remediation and is expected to be transformed into a flat state by late this fall.

“From there a remediation report is filed with Alberta Environment and Alberta Health Services,” said Rick Deans, senior manager of infrastructure for the Town of Coch-rane.

The report will be submitted by Edmonton-based development company Springwood, which is currently working on the site, to the two regulatory bodies and must show that the land meets the standards set in January 2010 by environmental management consultants Worley Parsons. (more…)

River Heights structure plan proceeds

The River Heights Area Structure Plan (Bylaw 17/2011) was presented to council during the Oct. 24 meeting and after a long process has moved on to its second and third reading.

After being defeated after its original second reading by council on April 14, 2009, Town of Cochrane planner II/development officer Stephen Utz presented the new and improved blueprint with more geotechnical and biophysical information to support the plan while adhering to both the town’s sustainability plan and the Municipal Development Plan. Sharply dressed Morley cadets put skills on display

Stoney Cadets stand at attention.

Parents, staff and students clapped their hands in joy, as they welcomed the first entourage of more than 30 sharply dressed cadets at the grand opening ceremony for the Stoney Tribal Cadet Corps (STCC).

The ceremony took place at the Morley Community School gymnasium on Oct. 19.

The cadets filed into the gym with white model rifles tucked under their arms, sporting crisp blue shirts and gold-striped pants, marching in time to the beat laid out by a drum circle. (more…)

Concert raising funds for beloved St. Andrew’s church

For Martin Russell and Kelly Joyner, proprietors of Tea . . . and Other Things & Spanish Guitar Studios, hosting a benefit concert to fundraise for their beloved St. Andrew’s United Church was a decision from the heart.

“The church has been such a big part of my life since I’ve been in Cochrane,” said Russell. “The people I’ve met there have become some of my greatest friends.”

In the spirit of friendship and charity, Russell is gathering a few friends — fellow music teachers from his studio — to put on an evening of music at St. Andrew’s Church on Oct. 29 at 7 p.m. (more…)

Urgent care signs to aid motorists

Urgent Care signs to better direct traffic will be posted at the end of 2011.

Anyone in search of immediate medical care will soon have a much easier time finding his or her path to assistance.

Alberta Health Services, along with the Government of Alberta, made the announcement on Oct. 19 in Cochrane. Town councillors Joann Churchill and Ivan Davies were on hand during the public declaration. (more…)

Bragg Creek hamlet initiative stimulates dynamic debate

The proposed hamlet initiative has been a hot topic in Bragg Creek during the last few weeks.

Rocky View County (RVC) councillor Rick Butler has received over a dozen comments from residents regarding the issue, some positive and others not so much.

“Many residents are concerned about any local tax increase,” stated Butler, “especially for what may be services for the core area of the community, not necessarily the whole community.” (more…)

Home Reno Heaven puts call out for recycled art

HRH store manager, Pat Robertson is beckoning all artists making works out of recylcled wares to drop off for consignment.

An offspring of the Cochrane Society for Housing Options (CSHO), Home Reno Heaven (HRH) is geared towards anything and everything to do with affordable home renos.

Expanding on this concept of recyclable wares, HRH is beckoning to local artists to market their artwork — made from 100 per cent recycled materials of course — at their store front by bringing their items in for consignment.

Tracy Tilma of CSHO thinks the concept is unique and fun, as well as a great way to get more artists and like-minded folks into the store. (more…)

Paul fills council vacancy

Karri-Lynn Paul has been elected to fill a vacancy on Redwood Meadows town council.

Paul received 62 per cent of the vote to defeat Trisha Gizen in a by-election on

Oct. 17.

Paul will be sworn in by Mayor John Welsh at the townsite’s next council meeting on Nov. 2. (more…)
