SISEC Select and OHA Red battle on the ice

The Swiss International Sports & Education Center (SISEC) Selects midget hockey team went 2-for-3 on their opening weekend of play at the Spray Lake Sawmills Family Sports Centre (SLSFSC).

They lost their opener on Sept. 23 to the OHA Red (CSSHL) 3-1, but recovered with a 15-2 win over the POE on Sept. 24. They closed out the weekend by beating OHA Black (CSSHL) 7-1.

Owner/operator, Fred Voser, started the SISEC hockey academy five years ago and has based the team out of Cochrane for the last four years.

“There’s a high demand for kids to come here and play hockey professionally,” said Voser, a dual Canadian-Swiss citizen, who formerly played professional hockey in Europe. (more…)

When Cochrane art instructor and painter, Jola Muran, was first asked to lead an outdoor youth-community mural project she had no idea that the project would turn out to involve so many people.

“I was so thrilled because I love to paint and I love to paint BIG,” said Muran, laughing, when remembering being asked by Susan Flowers, manager of Family and Community Support Services in Cochrane (FCSS), to head the project.

Muran had to round up enough students and parent volunteers to (more…)

Rocky View County

Rocky View council members discussed the imminent capping of the former Bragg Creek landfill site during their regular meeting on Sept. 20.

The initiative, which is a provincial requirement, will include capping the location with an impermeable layer to eliminate the possibility of contaminants migrating to any off-site locations.

Due to the nature of the capping, large species of vegetation, such as trees, will have to be removed from the area. Upon completion, grasses will be introduced back to the affected site, with trees and shrubs expected to re-emerge in the future. (more…)

Outhouse races deserve applause

Dear Editor:

I am writing this letter in regards to the Sept. 24 Outhouse Races.

I have lived in Cochrane for 13 years and have always enjoyed the races, especially because of its donation to charities in need, this year being the Cochrane Food Bank.

First, I just want to give a large applause to Guy, from Guy’s Cafe. This year the girls from his cafe came first in the women’s category and he immediately advised the crowd that they would be donating the money they won to the food bank. (more…)

Students at Mitford Middle School and Bow Valley High opened their hearts and wallets for a humanitarian organization called Invisible Children after two stirring presentations on Sept. 21-22 at each school respectively.

The non-profit organization travels across North America in an effort to raise awareness and bring an end to the abduction and use of child soldiers in central Africa, particularly in Uganda where a rebel war — led by Joseph Kony, the leader of the Lord’s Resistance Army — currently rages.

Students were shown a 40-minute video, which documents the humanitarian cause from its inception in 2003. (more…)

Manachaban Middle School students and teacher

If money is what makes the world go around, Manachaban Middle School students are certainly going to enjoy the ride.

For seven years now, Manachaban has welcomed the Junior Achievement of Southern Alberta (JASA) into its school in an effort to educate students on the importance of money and finances; in particular, how to manage a budget.

“Math is not just in the classroom … it’s out there,” said Micheline Butterwick, a teacher at Manachaban and the on-site organizer of the program. “It’s a building block. We bring the math real-world into the classroom.” (more…)

Coffee With Warren

My feet have been teaching me a valuable lesson lately about walking with God.

About two years ago, I started having a lot of pain in my feet. Some days, it was almost impossible to walk, and the strolls along park trails that I used to so enjoy ceased being enjoyable, and finally ceased altogether.

Doctors’ prescriptions helped some – for a while, at least. But the problems soon got worse.

So I tried changing my footwear, but that didn’t do much good, either. (more…)

The Universal Rehabilitation Service Agency (URSA) camp northwest of Cochrane is hoping to improve access to wilderness recreation activities for its clients with disabilities.
