This is an open letter to Cochranites and anyone without vision.

I was always under the impression Cochranites had open minds!

As I sit here in my wheelchair listening to the comments about transit, I am shocked at what I am reading. (more…)

Hiker missing

A hiker from Australia remained missing Aug. 30 in the Highwood Pass area of Peter Lougheed Provincial Park in Kananaskis Country.

Air and ground searches involving up to 30 people found no sign of Kevin Kennedy, 59.

The search is continuing.

Stenson documents love of western heritage in books

Fred Stenson was born in 1951 and raised on a farm in  between Pincher Creek and Waterton.

His dad was a cowboy who may have instigated his son’s love of western heritage and culture.

Now an accomplished author living in Cochrane, Stenson has published 15 books and written scripts for 140 films and documentaries.

Morley assault

An aggravated assault in Morley last week has left a 41-year-old man in critical but stable condition in Calgary hospital.

Daniel Byron Twoyoungmen went missing Aug. 24 and was found in a rural area near Morley Aug. 26.

He was flown via STARS air ambulance to Calgary.

Call out for sturlers

Stick curling

The time is near to pack up the golf clubs and bust out the brooms with Cochrane Curling Club registration set to take place Sept. 15 at 7 p.m.

Included in registration is a local sturling, or stick curling, league.

Joey Hyde-Wilson, who made it to the provincial semifinals for sturling in February, said there just wasn’t enough interest in the sport last year. (more…)

Hockey study counters theory behind bodychecking in peewee

Bodychecking study

According to a recent study, there is no difference in hockey injuries whether bodychecking is introduced in peewee- or bantam-level play.

For now Cochrane Minor Hockey Association (CMHA) will allow checking in both.

“Ultimately I think our first and foremost biggest issue is the safety of our kids,” said CMHA president Howie Kroon. (more…)

Generals holding tryouts

Hockey is in the air and the Cochrane Generals tryout camp is set for Sept. 10 and 11 at the Totem One arena at the Spray Lake Sawmills Family Sports Centre.

The Heritage Junior Hockey League team’s camp registration is at 11 a.m. Sept. 10 with ice times going 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. both days.

Profit third in worlds

Grant Profit

Grant Profit finished seventh at the Richard Cosgrave Badlands Dinosaur Derby in Drumheller, but it just wasn’t enough to catch Kelly Sutherland for the World Professional Chuckwagon Association (WPCA) world title.

It was a record 12th world championship for the driver known as King Kelly.

Profit ended up third with 1,259.5 points. (more…)

Olympian joins ski club

Adam Robertson

Olympic snowboard cross silver medallist Mike Robertson is joining brother Adam in coaching the Evolve Ski and Snowboard Cross Club this season.

The second-year the club’s goal is to prepare young skiers and snowboarders to compete at the national level.

Adam explained he’s coached for the last eight years and had four riders compete in nationals last year. (more…)
