Fines to start for distracted driving

On Sept. 1, distracted drivers who talk, text or e-mail on a hand-held cellphone, use hand-held radio communication devices, use other electronic devices, read, write or personally groom behind the wheel could get a $172 fine.

Vet helps control dog population

Nobody likes to get a needle.

That includes the large population of semi-feral and feral dogs on Tsuu T’ina southeast of Cochrane.

A group of volunteers spent Aug. 22 on the reserve implanting several of the dogs with contraceptives and microchips, giving them rabies vaccinations and taking blood samples in an effort to control the dog population. (more…)

No room for glass, Styrofoam in town’s recycling bins

With the town rolling out blue bins for Cochrane’s recycling, two items — glass and Styrofoam — didn’t make the cut for acceptable recyclables.

“The recycling of glass is extremely challenging,” said Sharon Howland, manager solid waste and recycling for the town.

“It’s much easier to reuse glass than to recycle it.” (more…)

Integrated plan works out snags

Although Alberta sheriffs, who are based in town through the province’s integrated traffic program, have to spend many mornings driving out from an office in Calgary’s southeast that will soon be changing, according to Cochrane Integrated Traffic Unit’s commander Dave Hardy.

The Calgary Highland Games are heading back to Springbank for a second year on Sept. 3 and organizers are hoping they have worked out all the kinks from last year.

Communication director Cindy Eberth said despite “four seasons in one day,” lack of parking and food vendor issues, it was a good day.

Armless climber prepares to challenge Everest

Climbing Mount Everest is a challenging task for the most able bodied of people.

For 29-year-old Sudarshan Gautam, the new owner of West 22 Pizza and Family Restaurant in Bragg Creek, he’ll be climbing the world’s tallest mountain next summer without arms.

Bus plan ridiculous: senior

Dear Editor:

As a senior and long-time taxpayer in Cochrane I think it is absolutely ridiculous for a town the size of Cochrane to consider purchasing four double decker buses and four local shuttle buses as well as a maintenance and storage garage for these.

As well, the number of staff to manage and run such an operation will obviously impact our taxes every year by much more than we can afford. Having been a business owner for many years in Cochrane I realize the costs associated with staffing and the impact this has on the price to customers of any goods or services. (more…)

Pretty soon it’s parade day and, no doubt to the disappointment of some, there will not be a double-decker bus in it.

Maybe next year but certainly not this Labour Day weekend.

Not everyone wants to spend the money on transit, or at least until far more details are known.

Vandal strikes Home Quarter

A vandal hit the Home Quarter Mercantile and Pie Shoppe Aug. 20 and 27.

The first offence saw flower baskets, decorations and flags ripped down and the second was damage to the last hanging flower basket.

Cochranite receives ND nomination

Cochrane transport worker Jamie Kleinsteuber has been acclaimed as the New Democrat candidate for the Banff-Cochrane riding.

Kleinsteuber, 34, was officially nominated at a meeting in Canmore Aug. 25.

The New Democrats are finalizing candidates in the province’s 87 ridings in anticipation of a possible November election. (more…)
