Full Meal Deal Grand Prix

Cochrane’s Kristy Mytrash earned a fourth place finish at the Full Meal Deal Grand Prix at Anderson Ranch in Calgary July 17.

Mytrash, riding A Touch of Dutch, finished with a time of 47.60 just .51 seconds out of the lead for the Rocky Mountain Show Jumping Mid Summer Classic II event.

The grand prix was won by Kyle King of Oclala, Florida.

Locals gearing up for Western Canada games

Cochrane is going to be well represented at the Western Canada Summer Games taking place in Kamloops Aug. 5-14.

Aidan McKeage and Callum McNeice of the Cochrane Cowboys wrestling club will be grappling their way to a hopeful podium finish.

In swimming, Cochrane Comet Stefan Daniel will be looking to swim his way to a medal. (more…)

Ironman 70.3 race ready to roll

With sun in the forecast, participants of the Viterra Ironman 70.3 should have some good racing conditions for the event’s third year.

The event name denotes the distance in miles but competitors will kick off with a 1.9-kilometre swim in Ghost Lake, followed by a 94-kilometre bike and 21.1-kilometre run.

The Ironman concludes at North Glenmore Park in Calgary. (more…)

Successful weekend for Cochrane BMX

Cochrane BMX had a successful showing for the provincial series July 16-17 in Medicine Hat.

Cody Gammon picked first and second in the intermediate male category while placed first in junior female.

Riley May earned a second- and third-place finish in novice male and Karsten Millman placed third in the elite male category. (more…)

Locals bring home hardware from 55 Plus Games

Locals returned from the Alberta 55 Plus Summer Games with a handful of hardware won at the July 21-24 event in Fairview.

Gold medals went to Elizabeth Stone and Marie Mason for 70-plus cribbage; Francis and Joan Logan for 55-plus tennis and Linda Sparks for 55-plus horseshoes.

Silver medals went to Don Courville for 65-plus horseshoes (more…)

It’s sad to see horse racing disappearing in province

When we seniors of today were young, the only gambling our parents could get involved with was the illegal Irish Derby, bingo at church or a service club and live horse racing at Edmonton’s Northlands Park or Stampede Park in Calgary.

I never got into the Irish Derby because tickets were $10 bucks each and my allowance wouldn’t allow it. Bingo never has turned my crank but live horse racing certainly did.

Rodeo, chuck circuits keep on rolling for area cowboys

With the Calgary Stampede ending July 17 and Cochrane’s Straws Milan taking home the $100,000 top prize for steer wrestling, it was back to hitting the roads for local rodeo and chuckwagon cowboys.

Milan headed for the California Rodeo Salinas where he missed out on making the short round.

Powderface42 tough, but very scenic marathon

One of the toughest marathons in Alberta, and possibly Canada, is the Powderface42, which was held July 16.

It starts in Station Flats, 20 kilometres west of Bragg Creek, and winds its way across ridges and valleys along the Elbow River.

The elevation gain on the route is 5,173 feet and the highest point is at 6,651 feet.

Finding right saddle important for horse and you

If you ride your horse, you have faced the challenge of finding the “right” saddle for you and your equine friend. It has to fit you but it must also fit the horse correctly. Not all saddles fit all horses.

This fit issue has recently become a significant fact in my life with my two new, robust quarter horses.

My very favourite saddles, two Vic Bennett Pat Wyse model western saddles, do not fit my quarter horses. (more…)
