Homebuilder skips first court appearance as more charges are being investigated by Service Alberta

Former MonTerra homebuilder charged

A group of hopeful homeowners were disappointed July 22 that a homebuilder charged with fraud, theft and violations under the Fair Trading Act (FTA) didn’t show up to his first court appearance.

Navin Maghera of Modena Homes Inc. was charged by Service Alberta after two people paid deposits on Cochrane homes that were never finished in the MonTerra on Cochrane Lakes area. The alleged offenses took place in 2008 and 2009 and the combined loss of both parties was in excess of $200,000. (more…)

Residents concerned with lack of information

Cochrane residents who live beside a proposed four-storey condo development on the former site of the Cochrane trailer park were not happy to find a notice of decision for a development permit had been issued by the Town of Cochrane for the property.

Tower projects not yet set in stone

Rumours that CCI Wireless will be applying to build a telecommunications tower near a proposed Lochend site turned down by Rocky View County’s (RVC) development planning in February are false, said Ken Evans.

Evans is on a leave of absence from the Cochrane Lake Gas Co-op board but is currently acting as the managing director.

Wesley band signature leads to bottle depot project moving forward

On July 22, Chiniki band member Curtis Clarke was informed that the band council resolution (BCR) needed to go ahead with his project was finally signed by Wesley band chief and council.

New beds for Morley shelter

Women and children who stay at the Eagle’s Nest Stoney Shelter in Morley can rest a little easier after a donation of 15 single and four double beds.

“A good nights sleep affects your whole well-being,” said shelter director Nora-Lee Rear.

Citizens on Patrol help RCMP locate vehicle; driver faces drug charges

Citizens on Patrol assisted Cochrane RCMP in locating a suspect July 23 who was later charged with possession of a substance for the purpose of trafficking and breach of probation.

Joseph Richard Park, 20, of Calgary, was scheduled to appear in provincial court in Cochrane July 26.

Just after midnight on July 23 Cochrane RCMP received a complaint of a suspected impaired driver (more…)

Ag plan released

Rocky View County has released its Agricultural Master Plan. With positive feedback it could become one of the county’s many guiding policy documents.

County residents are encouraged to come to an open house at the Goldenrod Hall west of Airdrie from 6-9 p.m. July 27.

Resolution drafted

By November, Rocky View County wants to have a resolution drafted on oil and gas development to present to the Alberta Association of Municipal Districts and Counties (AAMDC) convention in Edmonton.

On July 19, the county discussed how it would like oil companies to increase their notification area when drilling wells, which is currently for residents within 200 metres of the proposed site. (more…)

Meetings planned

With the Bearspaw band election fast approaching on Aug. 9, an Eden Valley administrator has helped organize community meetings open to all of the candidates for chief and council.

Norm Brennand said there will be two meetings held Aug. 3-4 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the arena in Eden Valley and a hot lunch will be provided.

It’s happening again.

No, they’re not changing the Men of Vision statue into an ostrich with a saddle and no they’re not going to put a trailer park on the Pointe of View site — it’s bigger than that — it’s another PANTO.

Unless you’ve been dead or in Edmonton, you’ll remember the local Vision Theatre presented a British panto three years ago and it was very well received by the community.
