Cables stolen

RCMP

Cochrane RCMP have responded to three thefts of Telus cable on Lower Springbank Road between midnight and 5 a.m in June.

The suspects used high-end wire cutters to access the cable.

Each theft was over $5,000.

Club presents finances

Town of Cochrane

The Boys and Girls Club of Cochrane and Area used its last town grant of $9,610 to pay for half of one club programmer’s $18,346 salary, Cochrane council heard June 27.

The presentation, made by Cochrane Youth Association executive director Dylan Oosterveld, is part of a council policy to learn more about why local non-profit groups deserve a town grant. (more…)

Nan Boothby Memorial Library makes case for continued town grant

Nan Boothby Memorial Library

Head librarian David Larsen presented council with the library’s budget June 27 in hopes of continued municipal support.

Last year it had initially received $356,669 in grants after requesting $393,000, but the town was able to find an extra $20,000 during budget deliberations to maintain service levels at the Nan Boothby Memorial Library. (more…)

Tschetter delays parole hearing

A Cochrane man convicted of five counts of manslaughter for killing two adults and three children when he rear-ended their car while driving a cement truck in 2007, had his parole hearing postponed.

Daniel Tschetter was originally scheduled to have a hearing in July but has adjourned it until Oct. 18-19.

Homebuilder to appear in court

Homebuilder Navin Maghera will appear in court in Cochrane July 22 to face 16 charges relating to complaints about homes he failed to finish in the community of Monterra.

Modena Homes faces charges of fraud, theft and misleading a consumer.

Do you think this provincial government will ever get its priorities straight?

Here we are still waiting many hours at hospitals yet our government spends money and time on something as silly as a driver distraction law.

Now that’s a priority isn’t it?

We get the usual cop-out that such a law will decrease highway carnage but the facts don’t even back that up. (more…)

Cochranites make rosters

Cochrane product Alex Krausnick-Groh made the final roster of the Canadian Football League’s (CFL) Saskatchewan Roughriders.

The team drafted the six-foot-three, 290-pound offensive lineman, who previously suited up for the University of Calgary Dinos, May 8.
