Bearspaw band election ordered

Chief David Bearspaw, Jr.

Although an appeal is said to be in the works, a Federal Court judge sided with members of the Bearspaw First Nation in their fight  for an election.

The verdict, which came down June 22, removes Chief David Bearspaw Jr. and council from office and orders an election to take place within 60 days.

Council moves forward on pool plans

Cochrane town council approved the proposed aquatic centre in principle June 27.

The decision means that town administration can now move forward on a funding strategy to determine how to raise the roughly $29 million budgeted for the centre.

Stoneys sign quorum

A long-standing disagreement between leaders of Stoney Nakoda Nation has come to an end after a quorum to release the private funds of the Bearspaw, Chiniki and Wesley band was signed last week.

The problem stems from Chief Ernest Wesley and council refusing to sign the agreement in March because of concerns over Stoney Tribal Administration spending. (more…)

Highway accident

The driver of a motorcycle suffered serious leg injuries after colliding with a guard rail on Cochrane’s Big Hill June 27.

The victim was taken by STARS to Foothills Hospital in critical condition with extensive leg injuries.

Two Calgary TV stations reported the driver as being female.

Vandals strike East End

Cochrane’s Devin Bailey came home from vacation to find his above ground pool slashed by vandals.

The East End resident said about 10-15 other residents were also affected when vandals slashed their vehicle tires near First Street East June 25.

Cochrane RCMP reported eight vehicles had tires slashed with another parked outside the Cochrane Hotel suffering extensive (more…)

Horse trailer goes airborne in crash

Highway 1 crash

A fiery crash involving a tractor-trailer and pickup truck pulling a horse trailer on the Trans-Canada Highway at Scott Lake Hill on June 22 left an occupant of the truck feeling “lucky” to be alive.

A west-bound tractor-trailer ran into the truck and horse trailer at around 4:30 p.m.

Council discusses financial plan

Cochrane town council got a sneak peak at the town’s new 10-year financial plan June 27.

Paige Milner, the town’s senior manager of corporate services, said she hopes the plan can connect with residents through its less formal writing style, its limited size of 12 pages, and by simplifying complex town documents.

Pathway issues voiced

East End open house

A June 27 open house on street improvements in the East End turned into a heated discussion about the town’s plans to use part of front yards on Carolina Drive for a new pathway connection.

To join one pathway section looping around the Spray Lake Sawmills Family Sports Centre to GlenEagles the council-approved sidewalk will take 1.1 metres off the front yards of five homeowners. (more…)

Car hits kid

A seven-year-old boy was taken to hospital with minor injuries June 23, after being struck by a vehicle on Quigley Drive at West Terrace Crescent.

Around 7 p.m., the boy ran out onto the road and was struck by a west-bound vehicle.

There will be no charges laid against the driver of the vehicle.
