Season over for midget Lions

The season is over for the Cochrane Lions football squad as the team fell 21-9 to the Northern Raiders May in round one of the Calgary Midget Football League (CMFL) playoffs May 18.

“It was a season with a lot of promise,” said assistant coach Rob McKinnon.

“Every once in awhile we came up short.”

Cochranites shine at all star bowl

Cochrane High School’s Ben Lawrence and Jesse Palmer suited up for the 2011 Football Alberta Senior All Star Bowl’s South squad at McMahon Stadium over the May long weekend.

Lawrence, a receiver, and Palmer, a linebacker, made it through two sets of tryouts that began with a list of 250 invitees from across the province.

This year’s event was our eighth annual with over 600 participants.

On May 9, I attended a council meeting where the agenda included the East End pathway.

It would appear that the town has decided to place a pathway and sidewalk in front of five or six homes on Carolina Drive.

Library to hold book sale

Nan Boothby Memorial Library

The Nan Boothby Memorial Library Board is inviting all book worms, movie buffs and bargain hunters to come out and scour its sale of books, CDs, DVDs and pictures for hidden gems.

Former board member and sale co-ordinator Barbara Archer said the annual library board sale, entitled Beyond Words, will run June 4 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and June 5 from noon to 5 p.m. at the library. (more…)

AgriSpirit funding available

Farm Credit Canada (FCC) is accepting applications for its AgriSpirit Fund until June 20.

Registered charities and non-profit organizations interested in funding this year can visit agrispirit.ca for eligibility requirements and to apply online.

FCC will give $1 million to rural community groups across Canada for capital projects. (more…)
