County gives up on plan to develop on Highway 8

Plans to build a growth node in west Rocky View County have been quashed by the unanimous vote of an all-councillors committee.

“We should cool our jets,” said Coun. Kim Magnuson, who moved to kill a development strategy planning to build for 10,000 people in the Highway 8 corridor.

Bow River can sustain population: chair

Changes in the way the Bow River flow is managed could improve flows throughout the year while maintaining water quality, the head of a stewardship group told Rocky View County councillors.

“This could be done at a moderate cost,” said Michael Kelly, chair of the Bow River Basin Council.

‘Uncertainty’ for crop prices

Cochrane-area farmers have a lot on their minds after snow continued to pelt the region over the month of April.

Doug Robertson farms 1,300 acres of canola and barley north of Cochrane.

He says although his fields were “powder dry down to two feet” last September, he’s gotten adequate moisture since then to get his crops off to a decent start this spring.

Robertson said hail is usually the biggest threat for farmers in his area but last year it was cool summer weather and a fall frost that left him with poor quality canola and a crop insurance claim. (more…)

Cochrane campground looking to expand

An all-councillors committee of Rocky View County has given an initial nod to the potential expansion of a campground run by community organizations in the Town of Cochrane.

“This is a community re-investment program,” said area Coun. Paul McLean. “Not a commercial venture, and that is why I support it.”

Semi truck rolls

Local police are interested in speaking with the driver of an SUV who may have witnessed a motor vehicle collision on Highway 22 and Township Road 252 south of Cochrane.

Cochrane RCMP responded to a call April 24 around 8 p.m. involving a semi tractor trailer that had rolled into the east ditch.

Robbery attempt

A Bragg Creek break-in was unsuccessful after the suspect(s) were unable to gain entry into Bragg Creek Family Foods.

On April 6, Cochrane RCMP were dispatched to the grocery store for a mischief complaint.

The suspect(s) smashed the front door window of the store and gained entry into the foyer. (more…)

Trust closes for resident who fell ill last fall

A trust fund set up for a local resident who claims his illness is directly related to the cleanup of the former-Domtar site in Cochrane has closed.

The fund was started by Virginia Mackay to help Randy Pace, who last fall blamed a reaction to certain hydrocarbons emanating from remediation of the former-Domtar site for the deterioration of his health.

Provincial grants doled out

Alberta’s Culture and Community Spirit Minister Lindsay Blackett announced $14.9 million in funding for provincial non-profit groups April 15.

The groups that have been approved, including nine Cochrane and three Bragg Creek groups, will receive the funding in May.

The money comes from the Community Spirit Program’s donation grants for 2010-11. (more…)

Wrestler places fifth

Cochrane Cowboys Wrestling

Local wrestler Ryan Loeppky earned a fifth place finish in nationals competition.

The St. Timothy High School student also wrestles for the Cochrane Cowboys wrestling team and plans on trying out for the Western Canada Summer Games in Kamloops.
