Cochrane’s Michael and David Law were kept quite busy March 24-31 with the GMC Canadian Ski Championships.

On March 26, the brothers competed in the downhill portion of the event under blue skies and sunshine at the Nakiska Ski Resort.

Rockies teammates partake in Calgary HockeyFest

On March 27, five skaters with the Cochrane Rockies atom girls hockey team took to the ice with Team Canada Olympic gold medallists Cassie Campbell-Pascall and Danielle Goyette for the third annual Scotiabank Girls HockeyFest.

Three hundred skaters of novice, atom, pee wee and bantam age spent the day at the Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary participating in both on- and off-ice drills (more…)

Selects win championship

The Cochrane-based Swiss International Sports and Education Centre (SISEC) Selects are the Canadian Sport School Hockey League (CSSHL) champions after defeating the Edge Varsity Double A Maroon in three straight games.

Rugby player to compete across the pond

Brandon Harrison

Brandon Harrison will be representing Cochrane on the U-17 Canadian rugby team when they play three games in England this summer.

“It’s an honour to make the Canadian team,” he said. “Its pretty awesome.”

White Wolves win gold

The Cochrane White Wolves U-10 soccer team earned Calgary Minor Soccer League gold March 24 at the South Soccer Centre in Calgary.

The team soundly beat the Chinook Arsenal 5-1 in the championship match.

Ti-Cats recruit Kruger

Cochrane’s Blaine Kruger has signed with the Canadian Football League’s Hamitlon Tiger Cats.

The six-foot-four, 210-pound wide-receiver played two seasons with the Calgary Stampeders before being released, becoming a free agent.

Dowling signs with Heat

The Calgary Flames American Hockey League affiliate, the Abbotsford Heat, announced the signing of Cochrane’s Justin Dowling March 24.

The five-foot-ten, 20-year-old is coming off his fifth season with the Western Hockey League (WHL) Swift Current Broncos.

Four firsts for Chartier

Connor Chartier

In his first game with the Spokane Chiefs March 20, Cochrane’s Connor Chartier scored his first Western Hockey League goal in the first period with his first shot.

The 17-year-old forward was drafted by the Chiefs in the second round of the 2009 WHL draft and has signed a standard player agreement with the team.

Cochrane dojo successful at nationals

Students of Cochrane’s Ippon Dojo were in Saint-Hyacinthe, Que., March 18-20 for the 2011 National Karate Championships.

“It went really well,” said sensei Adam Wackershauser, adding eight out of the 25 Team Alberta contestants hailed from the Cochrane dojo.

Cochrane to host rec tourney

For the first time in the league’s 16-year history, Cochrane is hosting the Foothills Recreational Hockey League (FRHL) tournament April 2-3.

“It’s kind of a big event for us, being it’s our first tournament,” said Mark Lenson, Cochrane and area co-ordinator for the FRHL’s Cochrane Cougars.
