Citing thousands of dollars in disputed Stoney expenditures, Chief Ernest Wesley and other elected Stoney officials have refused to sign a Band Council Resolution (BCR) to finalize the Comprehensive Funding Agreement (CFA) with the Canadian government worth millions of dollars.

Cautious approach needed to keep river’s health: rancher

A Southern Alberta rancher wants to discard short-term approaches to land use and plan instead to keep rivers viable for future generations.

“There are many ranchers along the foothills who could . . . parcel out deeded land for cash windfalls,” said Gordon Cartwright of the Pekisko group.

Chocolatier found in contempt

Bragg Creek’s famous chocolate maker Bernard Callebaut had a bittersweet March 24 when he received a roughly $150,000 fine for being in contempt of a receivership order.

Callebaut, along with his wife Francesca, received the fine for removing assets from their former chocolate company — including bulk chocolate and moulds that were then used by their new company Papa Chocolat. (more…)

Crash closes highway

RCMP

RCMP closed Highway 1A east of Cochrane for part of March 24 after a collision injured three people.

None of the injuries were life threatening, said RCMP.

Freezing rain created slippery conditions, which lead to the multiple-vehicle collision that involved a cement truck.

Town looks to support Team Taro initiative

The Town of Cochrane will support the efforts of a local group seeking to fundraise for a proposed aquatic centre and for victims of a catastrophic earthquake and tsunami in Japan.

In other words an election campaign and this one should be a tad more interesting than usual in this Wild Rose riding.

Running on the Progressive Conservative ticket in southern Alberta is about as sure a thing as can be expected in any politics.
