The packed conference room at Nakoda on the Lake Lodge Jan. 21 quieted down as a group of Elders started proceedings to swear in the newly elected chief and council of the Wesley First Nation with a pipe ceremony.

As the Elders passed around the pipe, more trickled in adding to the roughly 400 people who attended the swearing in.

Dust problems temporarily halt former-Domtar site rock crushing

Crushing rock as part of the remediation efforts on the former-Domtar site came to a halt Jan. 19 and 20 after wind caused high dust concentration levels and the town received a complaint about dust and a strong creosote smell in the area.

Town council endorses Highway 22 speed changes

New speed limit

Minor speed reductions on a highway bisecting the Town of Cochrane did not go far enough for a councillor concerned with safety.

“There was a concern about entering the highway,” said Coun. Joann Churchill, who voted against accepting recommendations from a consultant retained by Alberta Transportation to study both Highway 1A and 22 within the town. (more…)

Tower funding clarified

In the Jan. 19 Cochrane Eagle story “Having their say: Residents to weigh in on proposed telecommunications tower,” it was reported the proposed telecommunications tower for rural Rocky View just west of Lochend Road north of Township Road 274A would be utilizing a $500,000 grant from the provincial government and $250,000 from the Cochrane Lake Gas Co-op when it’s not.

Bighorn hosts nature speaker series at the RancheHouse

Owl lecture to be held

The Municipal District of Bighorn is once again holding its Living in the Natural Environment speaker series at the Cochrane RancheHouse Feb. 4 from 4:30-9 p.m.

The night features presentations from two Albertans: Gordon Court, who specializes in the study of owls, and Ross McKenzie, who specializes in the study of agricultural land in Alberta.

Citizens ask MP for fiscal restraint at budget consultations

Consultations with constituents, business representatives and local governments have convinced Wildrose MP Blake Richards that fiscal restraint is the way to go for the federal budget in the current year.

Province shows continued support for regional plan

A regional plan prepared by a group of 15 municipalities in the Calgary area received positive feedback after undergoing a cross-ministry review, officials revealed Monday.

Group wants feedback on warm water pool

A group looking for a warm water therapy facility in Cochrane’s new aquatic centre hopes residents will attend its first annual general meeting (AGM) to share their thoughts on the plan.

“We want our AGM to be a big brainstorm session,” said Pat Graham, chairman of the Warm Water Therapy Group.

Keys found

Cochrane RCMP are trying to track down the owner of a set of keys found on the path running behind the water treatment plant in Cochrane.

The set has over 15 keys, including three vehicle keys and a electronic key fob used for activating such things as remote keyless entry systems.
