The only place in town you’ll find a dog, a sleeping frog and a pirate ship all in one room is the kids yoga program at the Flowing Yogi Yoga Studio.

“There’s so many kids in Cochrane and yoga is such a great thing for kids I thought this would be a great opportunity for them,” said Jennifer Houghton, owner and director of Flowing Yogi.

Houghton said response to kids yoga in Cochrane has been trickling in slowly but is starting to increase by word of mouth.

Seven kids showed up Nov. 29 for a practice session with Calgary instructor Lexie Major who has five years of kids yoga under her belt.

Houghton said starting January, kids yoga classes will take place every Monday. Classes are broken down into age groups of 6-8 and 9-12.

“You’re stretching. You’re getting strong,” Houghton said.

“Working on balance is a big thing in kids yoga too and then there’s also a relaxation component.”

Major also explained some of the benefits of kids yoga.

“(It) gives them self esteem, flexibility, strength and focus,” she said.

She said creativity is key for kids yoga as opposed to adult yoga.

“You just have to be creative. I guess that’s the major difference,” she said.

“I don’t push the kids to do anything they don’t want to do and I always encourage them.”

Seven-year-old Callie Robbie was at the session with her five-year old sister Marin.

“It’s fun,” Callie said.

“It stretches your body and makes you happy.”

Yoga is not only really calming for kids, it can also help them learn better. Being calm enables the kid to be more receptive and retentive to learning. Here are some really good poses to try with your kids: http://addriya.com/category/free-yoga-poses
