Financial planning in store for 2011: council

If there was one main theme for town council’s 2011 New Year’s resolution it would have to do with financial planning.

Each member of council told the Cochrane Eagle in their year-end interview that they are looking forward to a 10-year financial plan, expected at the end of June, to see how a variety of big-ticket items such as a new pool, arts centre, RCMP detachment, riverside park and transit fit into Cochrane’s future. Wild Rose MP proud that crime bill passed in 2010

Wild Rose Conservative MP Blake Richards said he felt the last sitting of Parliament that ended Dec. 16 was “fairly productive in some ways” for Canada’s longest sitting minority government.

He said at least one important crime bill was passed.

Martin Parnell gears up for this year’s 250th marathon Dec. 31

It’s been a long year, but as Cochrane’s Martin Parnell nears the finish line of his 250 marathon quest he hopes there will be a crowd waiting.

“I want to encourage everyone to come out,” said the runner who turned 55 on Dec. 19.

“I don’t want everyone to think, ‘I don’t want to run’ (if I go).”

Local mom to ‘build it forward’

By the time the holidays roll around next year, Cochrane’s Helena LaPointe will be able to celebrate Christmas in a brand new home thanks to Paul Brandt’s new television show Build it Forward.

Set to air on Country Music Television in the spring, the show will follow Brandt and two Cochrane families through their Habitat for Humanity home construction sponsored by Stepper Homes. (more…)

Locals build El Salvador homes

Instead of throwing an elaborate Christmas party for their staff, Stepper Homes took a different approach when thanking employees for the year — the company flew them to El Salvador to help build homes for the homeless.
