A community group is proposing the Town of Cochrane build on a Calgary Stampede initiative from last year by increasing participation in 2011.

The idea of a full 10-day run with Pride of Cochrane featured on local driver Grant Profit’s chuckwagon tarp was explained to town council on Nov. 8 by a delegation of enthusiastic volunteers.

“We want to do it for all 10 days,” said Jacquie Matechuk, with Pride of Cochrane.

Last year, the event was conducted for three days. The $100,000 initiative will require 50 per cent support from the Town of Cochrane, with the remaining $50,000 being raised in the community.

Matechuk said a chuckwagon with Cochrane’s featured tarp would expose the town’s name to 150,000 cheering fans and three million TV viewers.

The initiative would count on Profit, said Joe Carbury, former longtime voice of the Calgary Stampede’s Rangeland Derby.

“I can’t think of a better example than Grant,” said Carbury. “The hard work, the family support, we got all here in one package.”

Cochrane Eagle publisher Jack Tennant said the initiative could be enhanced by a town’s invitation to the Stoney Nation.

“The potential to increase the relationship between the two communities are enormous,” he said.

Alex Baum, one of the local entrepreneurs spearheading the project, said while he could not promise tangible, immediate returns, having the Pride of Cochrane’s tarp during the “greatest outdoor show on Earth” would go a long ways towards increasing the town’s name recognition.

Coun. Joann Churchill agreed.

“It is a wonderful opportunity for international exposure,” she said, adding Cochranites wearing Pride of Cochrane T-shirts would also help.

Earlier this year, the town partnered with Cochrane Dodge, the Lions Club, and the Chamber of Commerce when each partner contributed $9,300 to cover the cost of the Pride of Cochrane tarp for three days at the Calgary Stampede. Council accepted the presentation as information, and will consider the initiative during 2011 budget deliberations.
