Benjamin Bradley went back to England with quite the vacation tale after visiting the Bearspaw area in 2006. On a windy June morning after a night spent at the Calgary Stampede, the 15-year-old and his cousin Olly Graydon were stirred awake by their frantic aunt.

Tourism group appeals for more funding

Members of the Cochrane Tourism Association (CTA) came before town council Oct. 25 seeking $34,000 in funding from the 2011 budget.

The funding request would cover 40 per cent of the group’s total budget and is the same amount they were granted last year.

Brooker named deputy mayor

The new Cochrane town council voted Oct. 25 to continue appointing deputy mayors in alphabetical order — meaning new Coun. Ivan Brooker will be first up to handle the posting.

Brooker will serve as deputy mayor for six months until April 25, 2011, before passing on the role to Coun. Joann Churchill.

McBride’s CRP acting chair

Cochrane Mayor Truper McBride has been named the acting chair of the Calgary Regional Partnership (CRP), a coalition of municipalities that works collectively to tackle regional growth and planning issues.

McBride’s appointment comes after chair Linda Bruce was defeated Oct. 18 in her bid to regain the mayor’s chair in Airdrie.

Long-term care fees set to rise

The more than 75 long-term care residents who call Cochrane’s Bethany Care Centre home will see their accommodation fees increase by roughly $500-600 a year this February, according to the Bethany Care Society’s president.

Highway 1A lot under county stewardship

Cochranites have seen vehicles with for sale signs parked on a patch of ground off Highway 1A just at the top of the Big Hill for years.

The lot, that sits wedged between the highway and Retreat Road falls under Alberta Transportation, said regional property manager Mike Morris.

Colts stumble in semis

A strong defensive outing just wasn’t enough as the Calgary Colts lost their Prairie Football Conference (PFC) semifinal 17-6 to the Regina Thunder Oct. 23.

“The defence played spectacular — awesome. Offensively, we just did not get the passing game rolling,” said Rob McNab, the Colts offensive co-ordinator, in a release.

Cochrane dirt biker takes on gruelling world event

Cochrane’s Almeda Rive packed up her dirt bike and travelled to Michoacan, Mexico, Oct. 25 for the International Six Day Enduro (ISDE) event. The 1,300 kilometre race, has been around since 1913, when it originated in England.

Rive said the ISDE, called the Olympics of off-road, challenges riders on a two-loop course.
