Habitat project hopes to move forward
Cochrane will soon have some new affordable housing.
Starting in October, work could be underway on two five-unit, two-storey townhouses as part of a Habitat for Humanity project.
The international, non-profit group is devoted to building simple, affordable homes using volunteer labour.
The site on Pope Avenue and Sibbald Street in the East End of Cochrane was purchased last spring after discussions with key local stakeholders, according to Lisa Clement, Calgary manager of family services for Habitat for Humanity.
“Volunteers will now build the homes, and (the families who will ultimately live in them) are required to contribute 500 hours of sweat equity as well,” Clement explained.
The 1,200-square foot homes will be built to the so-called green-gold standard, a building certification meaning the high-efficiency appliances will save approximately 30 per cent of water and energy costs, said Clement of the two five-plex buildings.
She added families will purchase their home with an interest-free mortgage, and the funds they pay back will be used to build future homes for other families in the area.
“So each family helps prepare for a future family,” she said.
