Council to determine fate of town logo in new year

Coun. Ivan Davies made a notice of motion during town council’s meeting Oct. 25 to propose changing Cochrane’s stained-glass horse logo.

Council deliberations on the matter have been held over to the first meeting in January while town administration goes over the costs already spent on the town’s rebranding, which was approved last November, and the potential costs associated with any logo alteration. (more…)

New council shifts the power in Rocky View County

New Rocky View Reeve Rolly Ashdown

A power shift in Rocky View County has placed two first-time councillors elected Oct. 18 with the top political positions.

Rolly Ashdown, who represents Rocky View’s Division 4 in the Langdon area, is the new reeve after winning the most council votes at the first council meeting of the term Oct. 26.

He will replace Lois Habberfield, who was acclaimed as councillor for her fourth three-year term in her Airdrie-Balzac division. (more…)

Bearspaw leaders give themselves two more years

Over the weekend of Oct. 24, democracy seems to have ended for the Bearspaw Nakoda Nation with the chief and council granting themselves an extended term of two years.

This comes after the much discussed survey that took place from May to July this year, conducted by independent consultant Dan Pelletier and supervised by Rae and Company law firm based out of Calgary, which saw 52 per cent of the Bearspaw Nation (more…)

Bragg Creek chocolatier’s family, friends source of strength after losing company

One day after losing the company bearing his namesake for good, famed Belgian chocolate-maker Bernard Callebaut is surprisingly upbeat.

Sitting in a French bistro in downtown Calgary with his wife Francesca, the 56-year-old’s hands dart around and his eyes widen frequently as he attempts to convey his hopes for the future.

Cougar sighting by Bow River near Crawford Ranch

On Oct. 23 at roughly 3 p.m. in the afternoon, a Cochrane resident walking his dog down by the Bow River by Crawford Ranch ran into a cougar.

According to Fish and Wildlife Officer Stan Hawes, after being followed, the resident and his dog walked into the Bow River until the cougar passed on.

Four black bears trapped in area since September

Local Fish and Wildlife officers have trapped four black bears in the Cochrane area since mid-September.

“We had quite a run of (bears) there for awhile,” said Fish and Wildlife officer Stan Hawes.

Three bears were caught in the western end of Cochrane and released northwest of town in different areas around the James River (more…)

Newcomer tops Redwood Meadows vote; mayor ousted

Change was seemingly on the minds of Redwood Meadows voters as they headed to the polls Oct. 18.

Seven of the eight candidates on the ballot — four returning councillors and three newcomers — were elected to town council with the odd man out being longtime mayor Tim Anderson.

Thunder prepare for playoff clash with Titans

After a tough 31-7 loss to the Bishop Carroll Cardinals Oct. 21, Cochrane’s St. Timothy High School Thunder are looking to redeem themselves going into the Calgary High School Sports league football playoffs.

Head Coach Pat Coyle said things started out well against the Cardinals but the team couldn’t complete their drives during the final three quarters.
