When the first annual Cochrane Arts Festival hits town, not only will there be tents set up showcasing various artistic styles but businesses will be opening their doors to artists as well.

Maxine Herbert, president of the Arts and Culture Foundation of Cochrane (ACFC), said that several local businesses will have artists working throughout the festival, as well as live musical acts.Jan Armstrong at Just Imajan Art Studio and Gallery is going to start a painting in the morning of the festival and have people bid on it as the day progresses.

At the end of the day, she said the highest bidder will go home with the painting and the proceeds will go to the Cochrane Food Bank.

Musician Marty Cochrane will be playing in the studio and Armstrong said, weather permitting, sculptor Shirley Rosin will work on a theatre mask outside.

Armstrong said opening the doors of the studio for the arts festival is good for tourism and residents.

“Just to promote the arts in Cochrane, to show that there’s such a versatility . . . with music and painting and sculpture,”she said. “The more all these businesses do fun stuff, it’s just going to promote the artists.”

Sculptor Luke Lukasewich is another artist opening his doors to the public from his Bow Street studio just off of River Avenue called Steel Stone Bone.

He thinks the festival is a great idea and will be good for advertising.

“It would be nice if more people would come to this part of town,” he said.

Some other businesses involved in the festival include Addie’s Creative Fabrics, Saffron Studios, Schooners On First and the Rustica Fine Art Gallery.

Not all the businesses contributing to the festival are necessarily art related, Herbert said, adding The Pooch Palace will be handing out dog biscuits to four-legged art lovers out and about during the festival as well.
