Wet summer rough on county roads

Rocky View County

The unusually wet summer may have resulted in more splendid than usual fall colours this year, but it’s had a detrimental affect on Rocky View County  roads.

Councillors heard at the Sept. 21 meeting, the infrastructure and operations department is hauling and placing gravel material to resurface and spot repair up to 80 kilometres of county roads.

Hearing set for underpass

An Oct. 26 public hearing has been set to deal with an application to permit new access to a road at the Hermitage Road underpass north of Highway 1.

At a Sept. 21 Rocky View Council meeting, councillors heard the road was one of 14 portions of roads in the area that closed in 1969.

Land policies revised

Rocky View County

Rocky View County officials have been working on an extensive revision of land occupation policies. Throughout the county, lands like  municipal  and environmental reserves are vast, unoccupied areas that are maintained mostly by the municipality.

But 67 of these lands, occupied by individuals or community groups, are governed through maintenance and occupancy agreements. (more…)

Town committees reviewed at council

Council voted to dissolve one committee and others show vacancies after the 2010 committee review at the town council meeting Sept. 27.

Council voted to dissolve the Cochrane Community Arts and Culture Committee (CCACC) at their recommendation.

Town council gets arts centre update

The Arts and Culture Foundation of Cochrane (ACFC) and Proscenium Architects and Associates have finished the $100,000 arts centre feasibility study.

Hugh Cochlin of Prosenium and Hamilton McClymont of Lamont Management presented the findings of the study to council Sept. 27.

Chamber makes a change

The board of directors of the Cochrane and District Chamber of Commerce announced Sept. 23 that Gerri Polis is no longer working with the Cochrane chamber.

“We thank Gerri for her hard work over the last few years and wish her well with her future endeavours,” wrote chamber president Richard Foy in an e-mail. (more…)

RCMP alliance

RCMP

Cochrane RCMP are joining forces with six Alberta sheriffs as part of a provincial initiative for traffic safety.

As of Oct. 1, the sheriffs will be working out of the local detachment and will be able to access all the information available to the local RCMP, but will still use Alberta sheriff uniforms and vehicles.

Rural fund available to charities

Rural Alberta’s Development Fund (RADF)  announced last month they are once again accepting applications for program funding totalling $30 million.

The fund was created in 2006 by the Government of Alberta to “support rural communities, regional alliances and organizations in kick starting projects that would contribute to the betterment of rural Alberta,” according to the RADF website. (more…)

Fatal rollover

RCMP

A single-vehicle rollover on Highway 1 just east of the Highway 22 overpass has claimed the life of a young woman, who RCMP believe was not wearing her seatbelt at the time of the incident.

Cochrane RCMP, along with Emergency Medical Services, responded to the scene of the crash around 5:20 a.m. Sept. 26.

Project manager to be hired

Town council approved a motion Sept. 27 for the contracting of a project manager and completion of the schematic design phase for Cochrane’s proposed aquatic centre.

Suzanne Gaida, acting manager of community services, said a project manager is needed right away to bring their expertise to the centre design.
