On Oct. 3, seven Cochrane firefighters will travel to Haiti at their own expense to build two homes in the earthquake-devastated country.

The trip came about after a similar mission by department chaplain Josh Tait earlier in the year, who will be heading back again this time around.

Fire Chief Mac deBeaudrap said the firefighters are travelling to a suburb of the Haitian capital Port au Prince called Cite Solei for 10 days. He added it was not only one of the most devastated areas in Haiti but one of the roughest and most dangerous as well.

“(The firefighters) figured it would be a good place for them to work,” deBeaudrap said.

While there, the crew will be staying at a compound where they’ll fly a Town of Cochrane flag.

In turn, there will be a Haitian flag flown at the Cochrane Fire Hall so that the firefighters here won’t  forget their comrades, deBeaudrap said.

“I’m very proud,” he  said. “It’s something, that if I could do it, if I could get away, I’d be on the airplane with them.”

Donations for the building project can be made  to the Cochrane Fire–EMS Society by calling Jeff Avery at 403-851-2540.

Chief deBeaudrap said if enough money is raised the group will build a third house as well.
