A lawyer appeared in Didsbury Provincial Court Aug. 30 on behalf of two individuals charged after a theft spree totalling about $350,000 was uncovered near Water Valley.

The jointly accused — 49-year-old Kenneth Lyle Hodgins and 41-year-old Andrea Philane Silljer — face 10 counts of possession of stolen property over $5,000 and one count of possession of stolen property under $5,000. (more…)

Candidate looking for competition

Jay Sarhan

The latest candidate to declare his candidacy for Rocky View County council said he would actually welcome some competition for the job.

Jay Sarhan has indicated he’s going after the seat in Division 3 that is soon to be vacated by Coun. Gordon Branson.

Yoga mats needed

A Calgary woman is sending out a plea to Cochrane yoga enthusiasts.

Sonja Miles is trying to launch a weekly yoga class for Calgary’s homeless, and to that end she’s looking for mats and lightly-used yoga attire.

“I know there are a lot of people out there that take yoga seriously,” Miles said of the Cochrane community. (more…)

Profit triumphs at dinosaur derby

Chuckwagon racing veteran Grant Profit will carry a great deal of momentum into the World Chuckwagon Championship after taking top prize at the 2010 Richard Cosgrave Memorial Badlands Dinosaur Derby, held Aug. 27-29 in Drumheller, Alberta.

It was the Cochrane reinsman’s first aggregate win on the World Professional Chuckwagon Association (WPCA) circuit this season and by chuckwagon standards (more…)

Resident falls victim to hit-and-run

Anthony Lazor was surprised when his neighbour phoned to tell him he should go have a look at his vehicles parked in his driveway.

It was noon on Aug. 28, but in the early hours of that morning a vehicle careened off a nearby lamppost on West Aarsby Road and smacked into his silver Honda Accord, in turn pushing it into his black GMC Sierra truck.

Athletes conquer Ironman Canada

Ironman Canada

A familiar name was the fastest among Cochrane finishers of the 2010 Subaru Ironman Canada in Penticton, British Columbia, Aug. 29.

Local sport physiotherapist Serge Tessier crossed the finish line of the daunting course — comprised of a 3.8-kilometre swim, 180-kilometre bike ride and 42.2 kilometre run — in little more than 10 hours to finish just outside of the top 100 overall in a field of well over 2,000 competitors. Kodiaks to retire Raymond’s jersey

The Camrose Kodiaks will be retiring Mason Raymond’s No. 9 jersey on Sept. 10 during their home opener against the Okotoks Oilers.

“It’s an honour, i mean to be able to be recognized by them. For me to hang my jersey up was a combination of, I guess, nerves for that day and excitement all mixed together,” said Raymond.

Colts struck down by Thunder

The Calgary Colts were handed their first loss of the Prairie Football Conference season in a 59-10 drubbing by the Regina Thunder Aug. 29.

The team features numerous Cochrane and area players.

Cochrane quarterback Brett Serhyenko threw for more than 70 yards but was intercepted three times in the defeat. (more…)

Bearspaw’s Yip sinks back in pack

It’s been quite an up and down season for Bearspaw golfer Ryan Yip.

He shot a red-hot seven-under-par 63 to put him second after one day of play at the Canadian Tour Championship in St. Catherines, Ontario.

But that second position soon faded.

In the later rounds, he wound up tied for 39th at the tournament’s conclusion Aug. 29. (more…)
