Before-and-after kindergarten care program needs kids
A brand new kindergarten care program is about to open for business, but it’s desperately looking for wee ones to register for the coming school year.
The Cochrane Youth Association (CYA) designed the before-and-after school care program for local kindergarten students after several social organizations identified this as a significant need in the community.According to CYA director Dylan Oosterveld, the group will be housed in Glenbow Elementary School for a few weeks until a new portable room is installed on the school’s grounds in October.
The program has room for 37 students, but Oosterveld said only six have registered.
“The program is going to run for sure,” he said.
“We’ve hired staff and we’re ready to go, but if we don’t get more registered it may not be feasible going into the future.”
Kindergarten students from any Cochrane school can be dropped off at 8 a.m. and picked up at 6 p.m.
If there is enough interest from other schools, transportation may be arranged in the future.
The cost is $690 for the fully-licenced, pre-accredited program, and some subsidies are available, Oosterveld said.
“Basically our rationale is if you can pay for it yourself, we’d like you to, but if you can’t, there are ways we can help you,” he explained.
To register for the program, call 403-932-4747, extension 24, or drop by the Cochrane Youth Association building.
