Local business owner alleges RCMP brutality

A local business owner has undergone surgery on his wrist to repair injuries he says were wrongfully caused by members of the Cochrane RCMP during a dispute over parking.

Cochrane soldier carries local pride to Afghanistan

A local soldier will be sporting the flag of Cochrane when he joins the Canadian Forces’ effort in Afghanistan later on this year.

Lt. Braden Greaves, who was born in Cochrane and graduated from Bow Valley High School in 2003, was presented with a town flag Aug. 30, which will be flown at the Kandahar Air Field  for the duration of his scheduled posting there. (more…)

Chair fearful for future of Cochrane theatre group

As BMX rider Sabrina Millman lined up at the start for her final race at the Canadian Cycling Association (CCA) National Championships Aug. 28, one thought crossed through her mind — just relax.

A crash on the Airdrie course earlier in the day nearly ended the determined 16-year-old Cochranite’s quest to be named Canada’s best junior female rider; however, none of that mattered now. (more…)

Entire current council to run again in 2010 election

Although the last member of the current council to toss his name in the hat, Coun. Ivan Davies said “choosing to stay involved in Cochrane politics was not a difficult decision.”

He said he enjoyed the last three years serving on council, but the more difficult decision was the time commitment.

Springbank Airport expansion brings economic boost

The Springbank Airport is expanding by three hangars and the airport general manager said the extra facilities are good for business.

“Any development at the airport that generates a land lease is good business,” said Larry Stock.

Charges laid in marijuana bust

Cochrane RCMP have laid charges after discovering a marijuana stash worth roughly $1,800 during a traffic stop Aug. 25.

A vehicle was travelling southbound out of Cochrane on Highway 22 was pulled over.

During an investigation by a RCMP member, a “substantial” amount of marijuana was discovered. (more…)

Biker airlifted

A motorcyclist was airlifted to a Calgary hospital with severe head injuries after being rear-ended by a fellow rider near Bragg Creek Aug. 25.

Eyewitnesses report a group of bikers were travelling southbound on Highway 22 when the lead member slowed suddenly.

Another rider ran into him and both members were thrown into the air. (more…)

Local kinder-care centre nears completion

Cochranites should soon see the completion of the town’s first kinder-care centre at Glenbow Elementary School in October.

Wesley Oginski, learning director for Rocky View Schools, said in 2009 Alberta Child and Youth Services put out a call for proposals for an initiative called the Child Care Space Creation Innovation fund.
