In an attempt to help the public understand transportation levies, Rocky View County administration has put together a question and answer sheet.

The levies are applied to developers to make sure they participate in the costs associated with creating new residential subdivisions.

The levy may only be applied one time on parcels less than 10 acres  unless a new use alters the building.

Residential parcels are only required to pay the transportation levy at the time it is being subdivided.

Some amendments to the proposed bylaw were approved at council’s June 1 meeting.

Amendments include wording that would identify the appropriate levy amounts in relation to subdivision and development, and the ability to apply partial applications of the levy in cases where only a portion of the parcel contains development.

But council did not  approve second and third readings of the bylaw.

“I won’t support it today,” said Coun. Greg Boelkhe. “I want to hear what the public has to say. I’d like more information.”

“It might be useful to postpone this until we have our agricultural master plan,” Coun. Earl Solberg agreed.

Coun. McLean felt he didn’t have enough time to consider the bylaw properly.

“I feel déjà vu coming on again. I think it negatively impacts our agricultural community.”
