There’s a few tickets left and if you play your cards right you might get a couple.

I’m referring to the world famous RCMP Musical Ride, which appears in Cochrane not once but twice Aug. 3 at the Cochrane and District Agricultural Grounds.

The performances are at 1:30 p.m. and 7 p.m.

The adopt a horse program for the ride is a huge success and once again shows the great community spirit (more…)

Remains identified

RCMP

The medical examiner’s office in Calgary has identified a skull discovered in Bow Valley Provincial Park as being that of Markus Dorig, a Swiss man living in Exshaw reported missing in early 2009.

A tourist found the skull July 17 while walking his dog through the park, located more than 60 kilometres from Cochrane.

Challenge rises to new heights

Banded Peak challenge participant

Organizers of a challenging physical event say that though corporate sponsorship is down, participants have stepped up raising more cash than in previous years.

The event was the Banded Peak Challenge, a gruelling 27-kilometre bike ride followed by a 10-kilometre hike to the summit of Banded Peak mountain.

Athletes bring home huge medal haul from Games

Like many of his fellow athletes, Erik Nusl ventured to the Alberta Summer Games with the hope of performing his best and maybe coming away with a medal.

However, after three days of competing in the Peace Region during the province-wide event held July 19-25, the Cochrane swimmer blew his expectations out of the water, so to speak. (more…)

Discharge given in gun mishap

Cochrane Provincial Court

A Cochrane man spotted holding an antique double-barrel shotgun in the community of Bow Ridge has been granted an absolute discharge.

Ben Giesbrecht, who has lived locally since 1999, pled guilty to careless use of a firearm in Cochrane Provincial Court July 22, two months after the reported incident.

Near misses continue for Profit

Grant Profit

It was déjà vu all over again for Cochrane chuckwagon driver Grant Profit, as he narrowly missed the championship dash for the second-straight event at the Bonnyville Chuckwagon Championship July 22-25.

Profit’s three-day aggregate time at the World Professional Chuckwagon Association (WPCA) event left him just six-tenths of a second back of the third and final spot in the George Normand Memorial (more…)

Rocky View election in October

Rocky View Division 5 councillor Earl Solberg will be seeking another term on council when county residents east of Calgary head to the polls in October.

He told the Rocky View Weekly newspaper he felt his biggest contribution was sitting as the chair on the growth management strategy committee, which saw the concept plan adopted in June 2009.

Ride honours

RCMP Musical Ride

Cochrane’s Stu Bradley and the Eagle’s Jack Tennant will be guests of honour at the 2010 Musical Ride for the two performances in town Aug. 3.

Their jobs are to give permission to the ride to commence after the riders line up, and at the end of the show they will be saluted.

Library art display

The Cochrane Nan Boothby Memorial Library will be featuring the works of two photographers starting Aug. 1.

The fine art photos by Heather Simonds and Len Cyca will be hanging on the walls until Sept. 14. The exhibit is called “Fresh and Forgotten” and features living wildlife and plants and still antique subjects.

Injury costs sprinter nationals trip

As the 2010 Canadian Track and Field Championships get underway July 28-31 in Toronto, a Cochrane sprinter is on the outside looking in.

Jennifer Zimmer suffered a stress fracture in her lower right shin earlier this year and is still feeling the after-effects of the injury.

Zimmer said she had high hopes for this season after placing ninth in the women’s 100-metre dash (more…)
