Const. Lee Sandau was introduced to police work by watching the TV show Cops as a youngster; however, when he decided to join the force a few years ago, he quickly found out the job isn’t all about knocking down doors and saving lives.

Deserted truck hit by train

RCMP

A train travelling westbound through the Morley Reserve collided with what appeared to be a deserted truck June 27.

The matter is still under investigation, but Cochrane RCMP believe the driver of the truck may have attempted to cross the tracks and got stuck.

No occupants were in the vehicle at the time of the collision and no injuries were sustained by the train crew. (more…)

RCMP goes airborne to nab dangerous offenders behind the wheel

Lead-footed drivers beware, local RCMP are going to new heights to crack down on dangerous activities behind the wheel.

According to Sgt. Dave Hardy, the unit commander for Cochrane RCMP Traffic Services Unit, two helicopter patrols were carried out in the Highway 1 and Highway 40 areas in May and more are scheduled in the weeks ahead.

Is there a morale problem within Town of Cochrane staff, and if so how severe?

If not, then why have some staff sent anonymous e-mails to the mayor and chief adminstrative officer  outlining complaints?
Complaints like July 1 pay increases for some upper management.

Are they warranted? Has their productivity increased?

Coun. Joann Churchill releases platform

Coun. Joann Churchill will run in the next municipal election this October.

Her platform includes implementing an economic development strategy, improving corporate customer service aimed at making Cochrane a great place to do business, and working to protect the town’s river shores as a great natural asset by developing a strategic river park plan.

Local triathlon returns

An international sporting event is returning to Cochrane for the second-straight year.

The Viterra Ironman will compete Aug. 1 with a 2.2-kilometre swim through Ghost Lake, a cycle through the foothills and finally a half-marathon in Calgary’s North Glenmore Park.

Town looks for debris solution

The town is lobbying the provincial government to follow it’s own plan in recycling debris from construction and demolition. About 25 per cent of municipal landfills is made up from waste and construction byproducts — a particular concern with all the development happening in Cochrane.

Coun. Miles Chester made the unanimously-supported motion June 28 to send a letter urging the province to move forward after extensive negotations and agreements with shareholders. (more…)

Funds set for housing

Two new affordable housing projects are in the works after the town allotted $1.2 million in provincial funding.

A $500,000 Habitat for Humanity project with 10 three-bedroom townhouses will be built on Pope Avenue if permits are approved.
