Electoral boundaries could be reshaped

The provincial riding of Foothills-Rocky View could cease to exist if the government approves proposed changes to electoral boundaries.

Foothills-Rocky View MLA Ted Morton, who is also the finance minister, was out of the province on the day the report was released. He is scheduled to return June 30 when he will be holding a media event to discuss changes.

Cochrane’s head RCMP officer said 2009 was a “very good year for policing,” even as crime rates rise and the detachment deals with ongoing traffic problems.

Assaults, thefts under $5,000, break-and-enter and fraud incidences all increased over 2008, according to a report to the mayor from detachment commander Staff Sgt. Jason Seper.

Multiple rollovers in area likely preventable: RCMP

Five vehicle rollovers in the area this month has the unit commander for Cochrane RCMP Traffic Services Unit urging motorists to slow down and pay attention.

Sgt. Dave Hardy said vehicles that wander even slightly off-road have the potential to rollover because the driver will attempt to rapidly correct their mistake.

Cochrane’s RCMP Musical Ride on track

RCMP Musical Ride

The Cochrane RCMP Musical Ride will still take place Aug. 3, despite the ride’s horses being put in quarantine in Ottawa recently.

A series of dates had to be cancelled after one horse came down with a viral infection known as “strangles,” and while a few other horses have acted a little under the weather there are no other confirmed cases.

Transit dollars

Millions of dollars in funding could soon bring regional and local transit to Cochrane as the government announced application details for $70 million in transit funding.

By 2012, three buses could be carrying Cochranites to Calgary, with local buses coming soon after. A plan already developed by Cochrane, Calgary and Airdrie will be submitted to the province. (more…)

An area woman with a keen interest in politics is hoping a new appointment will help her motivate others to get involved.

Elizabeth Bell has served as a village councillor in Cremona, located about 40 kilometres north of Cochrane, since late 2007.

Bragg wastewater decision deferred

Bragg Creek residents will have to wait for at least another month for a decision that could allow a wastewater treatment plan to be built in the little hamlet.

After an afternoon’s debate June 22, Rocky View County council unanimously decided to defer a land-use change until July 20.

Superbiker reaches first podium in homecoming

The smallest of creatures nearly ruined Cody Matechuk’s homecoming on the Parts Canada Superbike Championship circuit.

During preparations for rounds two and three of the national series June 25 at Calgary’s Race City Motorsport Park, the 16-year-old Cochrane phenom was running very well and had moved himself into second place.

Cochrane’s contingent remains intact on Stamps

Cochrane wide receiver Blaine Kruger arrived at McMahon Stadium June 24 to find he still had a locker — meaning he has officially made the Calgary Stampeders’ 46-man roster for the upcoming Canadian Football League season.
