Cremona rookie ready to roll

Cremona chuckwagon driver Jordie Fike is heading into his debut season on the World Professional Chuckwagon Association with an open mind.

“I’m going in wanting to run consistent,” said Fike, who has been busy getting his horses in shape in Strathmore.

“I don’t know what to expect with how I will measure up.”

Blues head off zones opponents

The Cochrane Blues rugby teams are charging into playoffs after a successful start to the season.

The boys team, with players from Bow Valley High and Cochrane High, trounced High River 27-5 in their first zones game on May 20.

“The boys continue to play really strong,”  said manager Corina Bauer.

Local BMX racers to ride north for Games

Although final team selections have yet to be made, Cochrane’s talent in BMX racing will undoubtedly be on display at the Alberta Summer Games this July.

That’s because every one of the nine riders who took part in the Zone 2 team trial May 17 is tied to the local area in one way or another.

Siblings attack bike track

Cochrane’s brother-sister biking duo of Karsten and Sabrina Millman put pressure on the frontrunners during the first two legs of the 2010 Western Nationals Series BMX circuit May 22-23 in Abbotsford, British Columbia.

Sabrina, competing in the elite female category, finished third in Race 1 and fourth in Race 2 out of eight total competitors.

Local stars at Senior Bowl

Cochrane High Cobras lineman, Ross Kostecky, joined the top senior football players in the province for the annual Alberta Senior Bowl May 21-24 in Edmonton.

Kostecky lined up at centre for the South Team in the big game, which ended as a 24-17 loss to the North Team rivals.

Local World Cup camps planned

The World Cup is the most-watched sporting event in the world and a local soccer organization is hoping to get kids fired up during the 2010 competition in South Africa.

Rocky Mountain Soccer Association (RMSA) will host two events at Spray Lake Sawmills Family Sports Centre during the June 11-July 11 competition.

First, for a fee of $30, youngsters can participate in a day of soccer skill challenges June 12 that will culminate with viewing the England-U.S. match on television.

Raymond wraps up worlds effort

Mason Raymond

Mason Raymond’s tenure with Team Canada at the International Ice Hockey Federation World Championship was short-lived.

The 24-year-old Cochranite joined the team in Germany after his Vancouver Canucks were bounced by the Chicago Blackhawks in the second round of the NHL playoffs. Raymond missed the preliminary round but did suit up for the national team in qualification round action against Sweden (more…)

Henry rides hot streak out west

Cochrane’s Joel Henry has wasted no time making a name for himself in the Western Lacrosse Association this season.

The 22-year-old, who generally lines up at the runner position, has scored seven goals and added five assists in his first three games with the Nanaimo Timbermen.

Local earns third nationals trip

Cochrane’s Cooper Hamaliuk is hoping the third time’s a charm as he makes a return to the Canada Basketball National Championships this fall.

Hamaliuk has been named to the U-17 Team Alberta for the August 1-8 competition in Winnipeg after participating in a tryout camp earlier this month.
