A Cochrane music teacher has taken all the stress out of looking for someone to instruct you in music no matter where you live. Shelley Steele-Gittel said she is constantly asked by parents where they can find someone to teach their child a musical instrument or vocals.

“Sometimes if the teacher or the student moves away they have to start all over,” she explained. So along with a friend, Laurie Campbell, she  decided to create a website to let people search for a good teacher, and MusicLessonMatch.com was born. People can search by price, location or instrument.

“If they can’t find what they’re looking for, they can post a job in the hope that a teacher will respond. It’s a secure database so only teachers that are already registered will be able to see postings,” she said.

In less than two weeks, Steele-Gittel said they have about 50 teachers registered and they have already attracted the attention of CBC Radio. The pair allows non-profit groups like choirs to post free, and private music schools or instructors pay a nominal fee.

“I haven’t seen anything like it in Canada,” said Steele-Gittel, adding parents are giving positive feedback. “One said, ‘thank goodness’ you created this site!”
