The Cochrane and District Agriculture Society once again left empty handed April 26 when a delegation appeared before council to request funding for the Phase 3 Facility Development of the Cochrane Agricultural Complex.

The upgrades are priced at $402,300, and they were asking the town for $100,000. The funds would go towards self-contained washroom facilities and wash racks (which would have water trucked in and waste (more…)

Website dispute attracts attention from outside county

A dispute between Rocky View County and some of its residents has attracted the attention of not only the Canadian Civil Liberties Association, but also the Alberta Legislature.

The battle began brewing after county officials sent a cease and desist letter to two websites — ourspringbank.ca and canadianguerilla.ca.

Rocky View County fire department gets unionized

Firefighters working in Rocky View County voted by an overwhelming majority of 94.3 per cent, on March 31 and April 1, to seek union representation from the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF).

An application was made to the labour board on March 15 and at least 40 per cent of fire service personnel needed to vote in favour of seeking union representation before the application could go any further. (more…)

25th annual Cochrane Trade Show to be the best yet

The 25th annual Cochrane Trade Show promises to be the biggest one ever.

The May 1-2 fair will have more than 190 exhibits, including 140 local companies, 35 volunteer organizations, and 16 safety organizations, spread across the newly expanded Spray Lake Sawmills Family Sports Centre.

County approves subdivision land amid water concerns

Rocky View County councillors have approved a Bearspaw land redesignation that will facilitate the building of a seven-dwelling two-acre subdivision on Blazer Estates Ridge.

The motion had previously been tabled after neighbouring landowners spoke out against the plan because they said they were concerned there wasn’t enough water to go around.

At the beginning of the year council chose to recess the public hearing in order to allow the applicant time to explore water-servicing alternatives. (more…)

Woman warns residents of telephone scams

A Cochrane woman who says she might have been the victim of a phone scam wants other community members to be aware.

Darlene Vincent, who lives in the East End of Cochrane, said she recently received a call from a man who claimed to be with Alberta Hydro.

“The (caller ID) showed ‘private name,’ but I have some friends whose calls show that, so I answered,” Vincent explained. (more…)

Cochranites pitch in for Earth Day

Cochrane schools, residents and organizations were all feeling a little green on Earth Day, April 22, and throughout the week surrounding it.

Sustainable Partners Uniting Resources (SPUR) held its launch on April 20, with over 60 people in attendance.

SPUR chair Valerie McCracken said the event focused on how the Cochrane Sustainability Plan will be implemented in the community (more…)

Reunited brothers look to bike across Canada

A Cochrane man is hoping that a cross-country bike trip will not only raise funds for a good cause, but will also bring him in touch with his past and family he didn’t know he had.
