Parnell’s passion catches on for kids at Youth Association
By the Cochrane Youth Association kids
We had a very special guest come to the Cochrane Youth Association on March 24.
His name is Martin Parnell, and in case you haven’t heard, he’s running 250 marathons to raise money and awareness for the charity Right to Play.
Yes, that’s right — 250 marathons.
What is Right To Play?
Well, we asked the same question and found out that it’s an organization that believes that all children learn through play — even kids that live in places destroyed by war. Sports teach us how to look after not only ourselves, but also others.
We were wondering how Martin got involved, and he told us a story about kids in Africa playing with a ball made out of rags tied together. It made us stop and realize how much we have and how lucky we are.
He said he has been running for seven years. We got to see such a cool side of this man — one who’s doing this because he believes in it — and we found out his passion catches on.

Marathon man Martin Parnell, who is running 250 marathons this year for the charity Right to Play, runs with kids at the Cochrane Youth Association when they had him in to explain what his Marathon Quest is all about. The kids are challenging Parnell to a step count, and currently the kids have stepped more than 600,000 times, but since Parnell steps more than 50,000 a marathon, and has completed 48 as of March 24, they may just have to step it up. Parnell will be back at the youth association on April 25 for a youth marathon during the Youth Expo. As of March 24 Parnell had raised $18,000. Photo by Rachel Maclean
We got to run with a hero, and know what? He’s a real hero because he’s doing all this with an injury and still keeps going. We wanted to give him the steps that we’ve been taking through our pedometers to help him out. That offer still stands, Mr. Parnell.
Meeting Martin was cool because now we understand why he’s doing this, and he’s real. We plan to run with him on April 25 at the Youth Expo.
He’s going to be running a marathon around the Cochrane Youth Association. For more information go to cochraneyouth.org.
We’re going to keep wearing our pedometers at the club, so if you need steps Martin, please just call us! And to everyone else in Cochrane, please support Mr. Parnell’s cause.
