Elbow Valley stabbing investigated

Cochrane RCMP are continuing to investigate a March 24 stabbing in the Elbow Valley area, which left a 36-year-old man in hospital with life threatening injuries. The man was stabbed numerous times at a home.

Sgt. Roger Waidson said the man has been able to provide police with more details and they are continuing to follow up leads.

“His condition’s improved and he’s able to speak to police,” Waidson said. (more…)

RCMP constable pleads not guilty

A plea of not guilty was entered on behalf of  RCMP Const. Eric Matthew Keith Anderson in Cochrane Provincial Court March 30.

Anderson, 22, is accused of breaking into an elderly woman’s home during the early morning hours of  Feb. 14. He has been charged with one count of break and enter in a dwelling home.

A trial date has been set for Oct. 25. Anderson will be tried by a provincial court judge. (more…)

Charges laid against Calgary trio

There are 42 charges laid against three Calgary men in connection with break-ins to over 50 rural homes last October in the Cochrane, Okotoks and Turner Valley areas.

Three of the homes burglarized were in the local area, two in Bearspaw and one in Bragg Creek.

In Bearspaw, the thieves stole a Toyota pick-up truck, electronics, as well as $75,000 in artwork from one home, and a Mercedes from the other. (more…)

Welcome to Cochrane.

Surely one of the few towns in the world where we can turn on the street lights, but can’t turn them off.

Unless you’ve been dead, or watching the Calgary Flames playoff run, you’ll remember the Town of Cochrane did not fully participate in turning off lights for the 60 minutes to mark Earth Hour on March  27.

Young Cochrane infielder snatches prestigious award

A combination of natural talent, hard work and community involvement has paid dividends for a young Cochrane baseball prospect.

Grade 11 slugger Brendan Hendriks, who is currently in his first season with the Vauxhall Baseball Academy Jets, was named a recipient of the Reno Lizzi Underclassmen Award at the academy’s annual awards-scholarship banquet earlier this month. (more…)

Local 4-H members put on a good showing at the Calgary Regional competitions.

Anessa Good from Big Hill West Light Horse took second place in the senior category, and will move on to provincials.

Brothers hit international podium

Despite taking part in their first competition outside of Canada, Cochrane Comets swimmers Stefan and Christian Daniel didn’t exactly show signs of nervousness at the Swimmers With A Disability (SWAD) U.S. Spring Can-Am meet.

Both brothers reached the podium at the March 25-27 short-course swimming event, which was held in San Antonio and featured the top disabled swimmers (more…)

Coin giveaway

A local bank is inviting residents to help celebrate the launch of a new coin.

The Royal Bank of Canada will give one of the Ice Sledge Hockey coins to the first 100 guests that take part in the open house on April 1.

Jaguars in mid-season stride

The Cochrane Jaguars Volleyball Club’s seven teams are approaching the halfway point of their six-month season, and have had some very successful results thus far.

Many of the 11 members of the U-14 girls team are very new to the game of volleyball, but the team has gotten progressively better and continues to improve. (more…)
