Springbank residents angry with council decisions pack meeting

Approximately 150 west Rocky View County residents squeezed into a large room at Kestrel Ridge Farm to attend an “emergency meeting” called in response to some recent County council decisions.

“We want everyone to understand the depth of the problems,” said meeting chair Gloria Wilkinson, a former Rocky View councillor.

Body found at Cochrane Ranche

Police say a death at the Cochrane Ranche Historic Site is not suspicious in nature.

On March 25, the body of a 63-year-old man from Morley was found on the site in the grass near a group of trees. It is not known how long the man was there before he was discovered.

Mayor McBride says new intersection will not destroy wetlands

Mayor Truper McBride said two Class IV wetlands located in south Cochrane will be minimally impacted when a new intersection for River Heights is constructed this June.

He said a recent media report that the wetlands would be destroyed is misleading.

Recycled home reno store to support affordable housing

Springbank molester sent to prison

Former Springbank Middle School guidance counselor Fred Henry Archer has been sent to prison for three years by Alberta’s highest court.

Archer, 65, who pled guilty to two counts of sexual assault and one count of gross indecency last May, had been previously sentenced to two years less a day to be served in the community.

New bill protects search and rescue groups

When Bill 6 came into effect on March 25, it put search and rescue groups across the province on equal footing when it comes to liability insurance.

Bill 6 states search and rescue groups in Alberta will receive liability protection when acting in good faith, meaning members acted with good intentions and according to their duties during a search.

Cochrane twins keep pace with nation’s top skiers

Just weeks after battling on the world’s grandest stage at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, Canada’s top skiers descended on Alberta’s Nakiska Resort to vie for national glory at the GMC Canadian Championships.

Also in the field were a number of young skiers looking to keep the heat on the frontrunners, including Cochrane’s twin skiing tandem of Michael and David Law.

Local cowgirl wins top spot in extreme riding race

An extreme cowgirl has done the local community proud, taking first place in the Extreme Cowboy Race clinic and demonstration held March 19-21 in Calgary.

Kateri Cowley, 24, who lives and works at the Rafter Six Ranch and whose family owns a home in Cochrane, won the event, securing herself a spot in the first ever Extreme Cowboy Race competition in Canada, to be held during the 2010 Calgary (more…)

Cochrane Folk Club ends season on a high note

The homegrown alt-country sound belonging to the band Nathan is the final act in this season’s music series put on by Cochrane Valley Folk Club April 10 at the Cochrane RancheHouse.
