Water plan starting to flow

Rocky View County councillors have heard from their administration  about water concerns in the jurisdiction.

At the Jan. 26 council meeting a strategic water discussion paper was presented to bring attention to some servicing issues, which are taking up an increasing amount of time for both council and administration.

As the Alberta Government has closed the Bow River to new water licences, some communities and private companies have had a difficult time meeting desired water objectives.

The discussion paper pointed out that in the county there exists a large number of independent water systems, some of which are working well, and others that struggle to meet provincial standards.

As a result of this non-standardization of systems, economies of scale have not been realized.

Administration recommended to councillors after consultation with individual system owners, that a potable water servicing strategy be put in place.

Reeve Lois Habberfield agreed with Chief Administrative Officer Robert Coon that a strategy should be developed.

“We’re making ad hoc decisions not based on policy,” she said. “But it is a complicated process. One size does not fit all.”

Council agreed to support the consultation with system owners with a view to creating a servicing strategy, with only Coun. Harvey Buckley opposed.

Coun. Mitch Yurchak was optimistic this strategy was the best option.

Really! They’re discussing this now! Surely this should have been in place before they spent between $61-$74 million (a good chunk of which makes up our $54 million debt) for waste water infrastructure. Can we see the “Business Plan” you’re going by? Do you have one?
