Rocky View School Board trustees have reaffirmed their philosophy of providing so-called alternative programs in the division — like Mitford Middle School’s Christian program here in Cochrane.

At a Jan. 21 board meeting, Superintendent Greg Bass reiterated the board’s policy of supporting the possibility of any program that has public or parental support. After a comprehensive feasibility analysis, and after board approval, the alternative programs will be allowed in an effort to provide choice in the public school system.

An example of this initiative, in addition to the Christian program operated by Mitford, is the program at the Prince of Peace Lutheran School located just east of Calgary. Both religious programs teach existing Alberta Education curricula within a specific religious context.

Though there had not actually been any dissent from the board towards this existing philosophy, Bass said he wanted to reaffirm that they were all in agreement.

“I thought I should run this by the new board,” he said.

The support was unanimous.

“This is a bit of a no-brainer as far as I’m concerned,” said Airdrie trustee Don Thomas, echoing the support of his colleagues.
Board chair Sylvia Eggerer agreed.

“What our programs of choice offer in the public system are inclusive programs of choice,” she said. “Whereas private school programs of choice are exclusive.”
