One eagle before death

Four bald eagles have met their untimely end at the Alberta Institute for Wildlife Conservation (AIWC).

The four eagles, which came in to AIWC between November 2009 and January 2010, died of lead poisoning from an unknown source.

The Town takes two important steps

What a wonderful town we live in. Despite some of the negativity we hear, our town is moving along well. We are making great strides at the Domtar site, and although we can’t always see it there is much going on to move it forward.

Ultimately, the Domtar site will change our downtown core and help to fill some of the shopping, and possibly, residential vacancies. In spite of years of frustrations over this site, (more…)

I moved here almost six years ago. My first awareness of arts and culture in Cochrane was at the RancheHouse as our newly opened municipal building.

Local organizations unite in support for arts centre

Arts centre consultants recently learned there’s a great deal of support for a new multi-purpose arts facility in Cochrane.

That’s according to director of projects for the Arts and Culture Foundation Cochrane, Brian FitzGerald, who said more than 80 people representing 54 local organizations attended some informational sessions hosted by Proscenium Architecture and Interiors. The Vancouver company was hired to put together a feasibility study to determine the viability of such a facility. (more…)

Woman killed in head-on crash

A weekend crash has left one woman dead and another person with minor injuries.
On Feb. 20, Cochrane RCMP responded to the scene of a two-vehicle crash on Highway 22, about three kilometres north of Highway 8.

Investigators believe the crash happened around 6:30 p.m. when  the woman’s vehicle crossed the centre line and collided head on with a south bound semi-truck. (more…)

Rocky View school board has a mixed reaction for the new provincial budget

In the Feb. 9 provincial budget, there was $6.1 billion budgeted for education — a $43 million increase from 2009.

Rocky View board chair Sylvia Eggerer said while Education Minister Dave Hancock has anticipated the increase in the number of students with this budget, the actual funding per student is not going up — and with the cost of living increases, the funding per student has decreased. (more…)

Cochrane foundation reviews 2010 grant proposals

Cochrane and District Community Foundation is ready to start sorting through grant proposals.

The foundation, which grants money to groups or individuals that “benefit the community as a whole,” received 37 applications this year and has $44,000 to give away — numbers that have both increased since last year. (more…)

Rocky View hopes to add school trustee

Responding to increasing population, Rocky View Schools’ trustees gave the green light to a ward boundary change that would see two trustees elected in quickly growing Airdrie.

All other wards including Bragg Creek and Springbank, Bearspaw and rural Cochrane, and the town of Cochrane will continue to have one elected representative. (more…)

Veteran Generals steer playoff sweep of Thrashers

Generals win

The Cochrane Generals relied on steady leadership from their returning players to sweep aside the Three Hills Thrashers in the opening round of the Heritage League playoffs.

Generals captain Kurt Briggs, one of three returning defenders on this year’s team, led the way with 10 points in the three games. Briggs’ fellow returning blueliner Mike Cann picked up five points and veteran forward Jonny Pictin pitched in four goals (more…)
