From a personal standpoint, Cochrane swimmer Breanna Hendriks would rather forget this year’s Canada Interuniversity Sports (CIS) Championships.

Hendriks did find her way onto the podium once during the Feb. 18-20 meet in Toronto as a member of the University of Calgary Dinos’ 400-metre relay, but the 20-year-old struggled to find top form in other events.

“I have definitely had better meets,” Hendriks said, “but it’s a team effort so I just did what I had to do and worked hard.”

Hendriks did help the female Dinos retain their national title with a 140-point victory over their nearest rivals from the University of British Columbia; however, this year’s meet was still a far cry from last year when the freestyle specialist won four gold medals and a silver.

“I was sick a few weeks ago for about a week and that kind of threw me off a bit,” said Hendriks, who finished fifth in the 400-metre and 800-metre freestyle races, sixth in the 200-free and 15th in the 100-free.

Hendriks also usually swims in the 400-metre freestyle relay but Dinos coaching staff replaced her with teammate Kevyn Peterson.

“Kevyn was really on her top game so they put her on,” Hendriks said. “It was the right move, I was upset about it but that’s how it goes.”

Now, Hendriks plans to spend a few days out of the pool catching up on schoolwork. Then the Dinos team will ramp up training for the Canadian trials for the Pan Pacific Championships in March.
