David Myles to light up Bragg Creek stage
For all those music lovers with a soft spot for jazz riffs and soulful sounds, consider heading out to Bragg Creek Feb. 6 for a spotlight performance by David Myles.
Myles is a singer/songwriter from the East Coast who brings an infectious enthusiasm and a versatile array of musical influences to the stage.
“It’s basically folk music made by a guy who listened to a lot of jazz and soul,” sums up Myles. “I’m kind of a crooner with an acoustic guitar.”
Myles has earned himself a healthy reputation on the Canadian music scene as a captivating performer. He has earned numerous awards, including 2009 ECMA (East Coast Music Awards) Recording of the Year.
He is currently promoting his newest full-length CD, On The Line, which showcases not only his songwriting capabilities, but also his unique selection of arrangements.
“I’ve always had an affinity for vintage keyboards,” said Myles, who features the king of vintage instruments — the mighty Hammond Organ — and a powerful horn section on his newest CD.
This tribute to authenticity is what has earned this young artist a reputation for being an old soul.
Instead of listening to traditional Celtic fiddle music as a kid growing up on the East Coast, Myles was raised on classical, jazz, blues and soul. Sam Cooke comes to Myles’ mind as a major influence, as do the songwriting styles of Paul Simon and James Taylor.
“I’ve always been on the quest to write the perfect love song,” says Myles, who got married last year himself.
Although Myles began his musical mayhem on the trumpet, his mainstay instrument has become the guitar.
“Singing is my favorite thing to do. The guitar lets me play and sing at the same time,” admits Myles, who still has a lot of love for the trumpet.
Even though Halifax is where Myles calls home, he still gets excited about getting out on the road.
“I love performance. It’s where songs come alive. It’s a different experience than recording an album,” explains Myles.
Myles is at the Bragg Creek Center Feb. 6, accompanied by Kyle Cunjak (upright bass) and Josh Van Tassel (drums). Doors open at 6:30 p.m.
Tickets are $32 and can be purchased online at www.braggcreekperformingarts.com or via telephone 403-949-4114.
