A group of Springbank residents say they have removed all content from their community website after receiving a letter from Rocky View County solicitors.

According to the team who runs  www.ourspringbank.ca, a site that allows local residents to vent their feelings about Rocky View County decisions (or anything else pertinent to the area) was asked in the letter to “cease and desist” from using the municipality’s name and logo on the website.

One of the team members who has run the site for the past year, Richard Wilson, said his group was surprised to receive the letter electronically.

“I think it’s very unusual for political bodies to send a letter to a website, and I wonder if it’s constitutional,” he said.

Nevertheless, Wilson said the group immediately removed all content from the website, leaving only a statement explaining what has happened.

Details of the letter and the decision to send the letter are not being made public.

However, Wilson says that philosophy itself sends a disturbing message.

“I believe in transparency,” he said.

“My feeling is our community has the right to expression, but I’ve been informed that while the council is acting in this maverick way, we need to step down.”

He added the group will comply fully with the order until it has obtained a comprehensive legal opinion, or until the order has been withdrawn.
