Kurt Schaerer was counting down the seconds as he waited for his daughter to step off a plane in Calgary Feb. 22.

Samantha Schaerer, a 2009 Cochrane High School grad, had been making the long voyage home after the Concordia ship she had been taking her first year of university on had capsized off the coast of Brazil.

Chief Bearspaw, still unavailable, fires senior administrators

Shortly after two First Nation elders went public about their fears that Chief David Bearspaw Jr. has been lobbying to bypass an upcoming election and extend his term from the customary two years, there was more concern on the Stoney Nakoda reserve when two senior administrators were fired by the chief.

According to Bearspaw staff in Eden Valley, the part of the reserve that extends to the south of Calgary, Roger Watamanuk, a 22-year veteran of tribal administration, was fired along with accountant Ray Friesen. (more…)

Cochrane officer charged, suspended

Although the RCMP officer who broke into her house has been charged, the elderly woman involved says she is still fearful, even though over a week has passed.

Mae Iverson, 75, said she and her brother were in the basement of her home Feb. 14, at around 3:45 a.m. and  “we weren’t down there two minutes and we heard a ‘kabang.’” (more…)

Walker and Snith fly to 15th-place finish in Olympic debut

For doubles luge competitors Tristan Walker and Justin Snith it was all about laying down two good runs at the Olympic Games.

It started as a dream, became a goal, and ultimately turned into reality as they placed 15th Feb. 17 at the Whistler Sliding Centre.

Calling it a “life- changing experience” Cochrane’s MacKenzie Greenwell said he’ll never forget the experience of dancing in the 2010 Winter Olympics opening ceremonies.

“It was absolutely incredible,” he said. “I’ve never felt anything like it before.”

Community garden gets ready to grow

Cochrane’s first community garden is expected to spring up this season.

On Feb. 22, town council got a sneak peek at plans for the garden plot at Glenbow Elementary School.
